“@DarrenDreger: Let's not forget Messier had extensive talks with the Oilers about coaching a year or so ago. He shouldn't be discounted as a NYR candidate.â€

well, didn't expect to read this when I woke up this morning.

Not a huge fan of Torts but I don't think this is the right move. 1 year removed from a Jack Adams finalist, one of only 2 coaches to get his team to the 2nd round the last two seasons, I would have at least given him training camp and about 25 games of the new season. Now I guess the madman in charge gets to make more roster changes.

If Ruff or AV end up in NY, I'm going to break something...

Any chance the rumours about Lundy not being happy with him and that's one of the reasons he got let go are true? If so, will Lundy have a say on who the new coach is?

NHL Network is essentially reiterating everything this board has ever said about Torts.

Torts gone, not a total shock. Who will be next? I don't really know. I don't know enough about the coaches in the league to give a valid opinion.

As usual, the Rangers off-season is more fun/exciting than the actual season. Starting this one off with a bang, eh? I too was convinced that the Gabby trade coupled with making it to the 2nd round again would be enough to lengthen his leash until at least next Christmas, but I'm very happy the organization has decided to be proactive here. This team, playing Torts' hockey, without a doubt topped out last season, and they needed a ton of luck to get there.

This move has Lundqvist's fingerprints all over it. If we're all tired of the team being under constant pressure in the defensive zone and watching Henrik get beat (and our players get injured) by myriad partially blocked shots and deflections, you know Lundqvist is too.

Now, please continue along this path, put nepotism aside, and hire a young, technically skilled coach that will implement a modern approach to the game. Organize the offense and PP and let Henrik see the puck and do his job.

Alain Vigneault seems like he would be a good candidate. Very impressive seasons with the Canucks.

I can't say I know enough about his systems, personality, etc.

why wouldn't he be good here?

Definitely don't want Ruff

Me neither. I mean, Vancouver plays Sedin hocykey all important minutes and litterary 20+ minutes a night. Vignault could be great, but you would basically get the same result for those minutes mentioned if I was behind the bench.

I think I got a fairly good read of how all teams in this league play, but I have no clue what "Vignault" hockey is.

I'd like Dallas Eakins, but I think Vigneault gets the slight edge in my book.

You know, in reading a little bit more about Vigneault, I think I've changed my mind. I'm concerned about the perception in Vancouver that his leash for youngsters is too short.

I like the idea of a minimalist approach to the game that AV has, but for a team like the Rangers to remain competitive year in, year out, we need someone who can handle young players well.

Lots of Nuck fans saying Vigneault plays too "safe" and has trouble adjusting in game. Not sure if that's what I want in a coach ...

I voted other - and I'll admit I don't know crap.

Do hockey teams ever hire assistants from other teams like they do quite often in football? Both the Raiders and Chargers got their head coach from the Broncos staff.

Anyway in that vein my vote is for Joe Mullen. I don't have any idea if he's qualified but he's been an assistant for quite a while.

Now someone tell me how stupid I am. I can take it.

Yes they do...the Sens coach was an Assistant for Detroit I believe.

Whats Trottier up to now? brushing up on his writing skills. Maybe the 2nd time could be a charm.

Don't laugh - with jackasses like Dolan & Sather, you never know

Its funny to see all the names come up.

"Im OK* with Dallas Eakins"

*until Im absolutely roasting him in 8 months when hes actually coaching a ****ed up roster.
