It would be like Edmonton not resigning Drai. Maybe Colorado had not choice because they felt they were never going to reach reasonable terms with MR, but I have no doubt their first choice was to resign him.
Difference is Drai won't be making more than McDavid for long and they don't have Makar in the on deck circle.

While that's true, to me this is a classic case of over GM-ing. This is about philosophy that nobody is going to get paid more than McKinnon
Leafs had that early 2000s, nobody was goign ot get paid more than Sundin
I actually like the move on the hockey front. It's a lot better than losing him for free, and he shouldn't make more than Mackinnon, irrespective of cap inflation.

They can allocate the number around the team. Perhaps another team could explore this idea. ;)

But on the cap: The idea of a $84m cap floor is kind of crazy, particularly for the smaller teams.

Why? Rantanen being paid more than MacKinnon wouldn’t have changed everyone knowing that MacKinnon is the better player. Salaries rise with the cap - when it’s a slow, gradual increase things mostly work out in this regard, but the cap is growing at a massive amount and I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect contracts signed years ago to artificially restrict contracts being signed now in a much different cap situation
