Toronto Maple Leafs fans are not sure who the general manager will be next season.

Current Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas is in the final year of his contract and is a lame duck situation.

Kyle Dubas’ future with the Leafs may already be decided for all anyone knows, though some insist that it will come down to how well the team performs in the 2023 NHL playoffs.

Another first-round exit would likely end his tenure as Toronto’s GM, however, its going to depend on how the team performs overall.

Dubas has spent the past few seasons putting together a talented Toronto team, only to see it fail in the playoffs. This season, more than others, there is a lot at stake for Dubas and his team.

If this is indeed Dubas’ last season as the GM in Toronto, it may also be Shanahan’s.

Here are a few options the Leafs could explore, if necessary.

Toronto Maple Leafs Future GM Options

There will be no shortage of possibilities for Shanahan when selecting the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It is a pretty coveted job within the NHL. So, when the time comes to hire a new GM, who will he choose?

Brandon Pridham

Brandon Pridham is the current Assistant GM to Kyle Dubas and the wizard behind Toronto’s salary cap. His knowledge of Toronto’s salary cap future and the players makes him a great candidate. The big question will be whether or not he stays with the team or decides to follow Dubas to Dubas’ next landing spot. If he stays, he’s at the top of the list for Dubas’s replacement.

Ryan Hardy

Ryan Hardy is the current general manager of the Toronto Marlies and is an assistant GM to Kyle Dubas. Hardy has held the position of Marlies GM since June 25th, 2021. He has a good working knowledge of Toronto’s prospects and what this team needs moving forward.

Doug Gilmour

Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Doug Gilmour is a fan favourite in Toronto. He was a very hard-working player and knows what it takes to win. From 2011 to 2017, Gilmour was the GM of the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL. He acted as team president for Kingston from 2017 to 2019 before leaving the team to join the Toronto Maple Leafs as a community representative. There is no telling how well Gilmour would do as the GM in Toronto, but he would be starting with a talented roster.

Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser

Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser is currently an assistant GM with the Toronto Maple Leafs in charge of player development. She knows a thing or two about winning. As a member of Canada’s women’s hockey team, Wickenheiser won four Olympic gold medals and one Olympic silver medal.

She also helped Team Canada win seven gold medals at the World Championships, along with six silver medals. Her role in player development would be an asset if Shanahan decides it’s time for her to be promoted.

Probably somebody worse.

Leafs were silly to leave this until now, and now we have to hope Dubas won't leave.

Seems likely he'll stay though. Seems like the type to want to finish what he's started.

Either way, this is an offseason discussion.

If Dubas fails and ultimately needs to be replaced, I dont think you're hiring someone even less experienced from the same philosophy camp (Hardy, Pridham etc).

Could happen but I'd say it's far more likely you'd hire either A) More experienced GM or B) Someone that see's the game a bit differently than the current management group.

Don't know that it'd be any of the four candidates listed. Just as experience previously gave way to promise (Lamoriello to Dubas), I'd probably now anticipate a swing back in that potential replacement for Dubas already possessing some kind of track record at the NHL level.

If Leafs want to have any sustained success they should just hire me ;)

On a serious note:

Barry Trotz

Trotz has said he wants to manage a team in a GM capacity. Probably Trotz being GM/Coach may be better especially if we want to win

LMAO

Gilmour and Haley

COME ON
That is clickbait at its finest.

The next GM for the leafs will not be a young inexperienced up and come'r. It will be a Poile/Armstrong/Yzerman type.
I still think Dubas has learned on the job...no sense throwing to the curb now.

His firing is not imminent, but there’s a 50%+ chance Dubas has a little over three months left in his tenure as Leafs GM. If he’s not the biggest storyline surrounding the team, it’s certainly near the top.

I think they win a round, he stays, and then rebuilds this team.

Somebody already mentioned it, but I feel like the out of left field outcome is Barry Trotz. By choice this guy hasnt tied himself to an NHL job. He has spoken about wanting to be part of an original 6 franchise.

If the leafs lose in round one again I could see Toronto employing Trotz, in either a coaching position or management position.

Obviously yes. Leafs win 1+ rounds and this is all poof
Probably. But Leafs have never won a round with this team so it’s worth chatting about. The Leafs have a rough path to a deep post season. Not that they can’t but they don’t give me much confidence they will.

They'll be a long list of quality candidates who'd kill to be our next GM if the spot opens up .

Hardy/Wick won't be even be considered , hell Wick shouldn't even be employed by the team considering she can't devote any of her time to the positions she's been in . If they want to give a opportunity to a woman they should hire Ponder in some capacity .

If they were afraid he would leave, why haven't they extended him? Truth is the guy is in over his head and it took management this long to see that he does not know how to build a team that can win in the playoffs. I mean I can win in the regular season gifted with the 3 amigos Lou left.
