Hello all, long time lurker.

Great thread for me to introduce myself.

WELCOME

I hope you have come to terms by now to our devastating playoff loss. And are now as a true Leaf fan, hopeful for the upcoming season.

1 or 8. Let's just make it. And let the boys run wild.

A cup will be at the skydome. And the other boys in blue will bring a world series home.

nah you'll see they'll tear it up. The issue was actually Hyman, not Marner always looking for Matthews. Hyman is a workhorse that gets loose pucks and battles hard on the boards but he doesn't have a shot. He scores from in-close. Tips, rebounds, short re-directs etc. He's not a threat when Marner-Matthews try to run a skill game.

So Marner has nothing. Hyman isn't a threat to shoot. Marner can't snipe from out far either. Opponents only need to worry about Matthews + collapse down low to take out Hyman. Habs played that line like teams play our powerplay when Marner is on the wall at Rielly at point. You can pretty much let them do whatever they want and focus on the other 3 guys only.

Ritchie has a nice wrister and has the skillset to score in all the ways Hyman does so Marner will get to dance more this season due to the different dynamics.
Could be but the thought of having AM on one line, Marner on another and Willie on one like we all once thought would happen back when they were still Rookie is too good to pass up.

Hughes, OEL, Myers, Pettersson, Horvat, Miller, Boeser (Needs a new contract next year) @ around 45 million cap hit for a last place team or
Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Muzzin, Brodie, Rielly (Needs a contract next year) @ around 55 million cap hit for a first place team?

I can't believe Benning doesnt take more heat.

Benning gets lots of heat on the main board but relative to Dubas it's honestly laughable. Jim Benning is who they pretend Dubas is.

What's funnier is that the groups aren't even comparable in terms of talent. Matthews and Marner are on another tier entirely and on top of that all of the leafs guys are positive impact guys unlike OEL and Myers.

I don't like splitting all 3. Two of them need to be together. I'll go with your Marner idea because Matthews-Nylander is the OG Shanahan era duo.

I really think Marner should run his own line. He looks more dangerous than always looking for JT or AM.
It won’t happen though but I think that’s something Keefe should try.
I agree
Have Matthews and Marner run their own line.. when things slow down, out them back together.

Kerfoot-Matthews-Kase
Bunting- Tavares - Nylander
Richie - kampf - Marner
Engvall - Brooks/Spezza - Simmonds/Spezza

I know the points didn't show it but Kase jam. He was keeping up. Stood out to me in the last games of preseason.

And kampf was puck hounding hard and it created turnovers. Marner and Ritchie played great in puck break transitions.

The OEL trade reminds me of our Dion trade.
Both Dman seems to be trending downwards with big contracts while the team that traded for them got contracts they want to bury.

The team was solid today and overall grittier, which is exactly what we need.

However, I don’t want to get too ahead of myself. We still need to see the Leafs up against the top grittier teams in the league to understand how much they have truly grown/changed.

I’m hitting the reset button here with a full season of Campbell/Mrazek, all the new additions and a fully recovered from wrist injury Simmonds.

My sights and judgement are on the playoffs, but the regular season should be fun nonetheless.

Go Leafs go!

You just don't play Marner on the 3rd line with a guy like Kampf. I get splitting the talent but Marner with JT or Matthews needs to be a thing imo.

I doubt Marner gets 50 points playing with Kampf and Ritchie. He needs to play with a goal scorer to be most effective. If he doesn't play with 34,91 or 88, the next best scoring option is 25. Mute point, he is not being moved off the top line IMO.

how does kerfoot , the worst 5 on 5 player statistically on this team last year, deserve to play first line with matthews ?

Pretty sure that Simmonds chirped this to Sabourin while they were in the box. "You can't play hockey. You can't fight. Why are you here"?
