Toronto Maple Leafs are surprisingly underperforming

I mean, its early. Theyre still a good team.

I cant see any team paying Tavares $11 million being serious contenders, especially with the problems they have in net. But theyre still a very good team.

You've been a top-10 defensive team exactly ONCE in the last 6 seasons and you were barely top-10. You were literally 17th in goals against last season.

Christ you don't even know your own team :laugh::laugh:
Oh I do. I suspect you are looking at goals against and not defensive metrics. You have to factor in the AHL goalies tending the net.

Don’t know if you call the team that wins a skill competition a winner. 3on3 and shootouts are just gimmicks nothing to do with hockey. Both teams got 1 point for the tie and one gets 1 more point for out gimmicking the other team
So winning the skill completion results in a “win”. But losing the skill completion results in a “tie”.

Only in the nhl….

There’s 32 teams in the league, and only like 6 are sub .500. Lol

If Austin Matthews looked less like a porn star I think the Leafs would do better.

Should be a very easy win for the Leafs tonight catching the Flyers on the second game of back to back and last night went to OT. Flyers are starting Sandstrom a backup goalie who hasn't won a game in the NHL yet. Sounds like a Matthews hat trick in coming to me. Fans will start planning the parade route.

Feels like a pretty bad situation. Crazy high pressure and expectations, kinda feels like there's that "make or break" pressure to get things done and win a playoff series and everything. To justify the Dubas "team building philosophy" with skill, analytics driven stuff, bargain hunting for goaltenders, etc. Something's gotta give, 'cause it seems like the entire organization are kind of in their own heads at this point.

I'm sure they'll pick it back up but I'd be incredibly surprised if they were really a contender this season. You never know I guess but the depth they added this year seems worse than previous years.

The bottom 6 seems relatively weak right now. Top 6 is fine if the best players are paying their best but Kerfoot is not a top 6 player either. It's easier for teams to matchup against the top 2 lines this season than it was last season.

The right side of the defense is just not cutting it either. They'll need incredible goaltending all season to make up for it and that's also not a given at this point.

I'm fully expecting changes will come this year and I really don't see this team making it further than previous seasons. Atlantic is getting stronger and Leafs, at least on paper, seem to be going the opposite direction.

Inb4 the kings of the league lead the way on another lockout so they can have a compliance buyout

Welp, not sure how the season will go, but they'll always have respect in the handshake line.

Sad thing is I can't even dunk on the main boards for these threads because the Leaf board was just as bad. I just have to accept the average fan has a memory of the last game and that is it. It was always obvious that the Leafs were not going to stay in the bottom 5 for goals for and they were not playing like they could.

Right now they have very strong defensive stats, pretty good goaltending, and their offensive is finding it's game being led by Tavares. Of course they will lose games, it will be tough with 4th and 5th string goalies in net for the next week or so, but this is still a very good team.

If you didn't think this was a good regular season team I question your ability to evaluate hockey tbh

Every hockey fans knows that the Leafs are a flawed hockey team, they are badly construct, they have build their teams around 4 players Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander all forwards bad mistake, you need to have a skilled back end to win. The Leafs have enough talent to make the playoffs but who knows what happens, Vegas missed the playoffs last year and they have a lot of talent on that team. But as a Sens fans the more chaos in Leafs nation the better :)
good point. It will distract you from all your losses.
