There is no reason we couldn’t sign on of the guys we have on a minor league deal to an NHL one.

For a team who's low on contract spots it wouldn't really seem worth it for the short term unless they were planning on doing that anyway(which is reasonable with Petruzzelli). If it's longer term then you have to probably go higher upside with some trade. If either of Murray or Samsonov are back within a week run some PTO backup tomorrow. Hildeby backs up the rest of the games and problem resolves itself. There really isn't much difference between a short term backup placeholder Petruzzelli and short term backup placeholder Hildeby except that you have to use your last contract spot on 1 of them.

Moving contracts out isn’t difficult at all. People vastly overstate how much of a problem this is.

The issue is the Leafs depth is decent enough I don't really want to dump anyone except perhaps Gogolev. The Marlies probably need Hollowell, they just signed Ellis and McMann. SDA is doing well. These 5 guys in Europe on NHL contract is silly but it is what it is which is taking up room.

I'd prefer to just run Hildeby as the backup who doesn't play for a week or 2 rather than sign Petruzzelli and then have to dump SDA or another useful depth piece the next time we need a contract slot.

If they were planning on signing Petruzzelli anyway then great, this sped up the process. But panic filling the 1 spot you just opened up so your AHL prospect can sit on the bench for 2 weeks instead of your SHL prospect seems rather silly and reactionary. They needlessly signed Hildeby for some reason this offseason just to stay in Sweden. Might as well make use of it now that you've done it.

Petruzzelli just got signed. They were never going to call up a guy from Sweden for a game tomorrow, get real.

I literally said use a PTO backup tomorrow and Hildeby after that because obviously Hildeby wasn't going to get here from Sweden tomorrow morning. But sure don't bother reading my posts.

Obviously for this to happen so quickly they likely already had something in the works with Petruzzelli which is fine. He's likely worth the ELC regardless. I was saying don't just do it because they need someone to bench warm for a week.

They were never going to call up a goalie from Sweden as an emergency backup at all. Come on.

Can he make it from Sweden to Carolina overnight?

Wouldn't that be kind of cool if we could have an emergency goalie finish a win against Carolina tomorrow?

How come no one is talking about Hildeby?
11 games, .929 SV% in the AHL this season.
