My initial plan was a week in Costa Rica and then fly back after for the Jamaica game. But I 100% had covid a couple weeks ago and couldn't get an official test, so I'm afraid if I go to CR I can still residually test positive on the PCR and won't be able to fly back.
Yeah that would be an unfortunate turn. This darn COVID thing is making life complicated lol

Canada and US should make an agreement at the start of the game, lets just get a quick draw here and get back to our warm hotel room. Make sure we can catch the end of the Chiefs/Bengals game.

The win last night and a win against the US would put Canada at 22 points. Panama, in 4th, can still reach 29 points if they win out. So, they still have a ways to go to clinch a spot.

ok lets be realistic here... every team can't win out and teams in 4 5 6 7 are not going to win out.

I don't think the cold will be too much of a factor. The USA did their camp in the North of the States and have been playing out of Columbus. Not as cold as up here but still brisker. Plus we did out camp in Florida lol, kind of switched places with them.

The cold is a huge factor, it essentially takes the skill element out of the game which is obviously an advantage for Canada. There just isn't much you can do skill wise in sub zero conditions, the pressure of the ball increases which makes it feel heavier, and your lungs burn. If there is snow on the pitch the ball will also be slick which is a nightmare for plays that require feel, traction and touch. When I was younger I used to hate playing in the rain or subzero cold because it was near impossible to make skill plays. It always felt like the game devolved into kick and run.

Can confirm. Very easy to misplay the ball when it’s that slick, or even flat out fall when trying to turn/stop quickly.

Big big win. Way to go Canada. That huge save then leading to that David goal. Beauty.

Glad we won, but how was that David goal not offside?

He took that pass off his chest past the midfield line infront of the defenders. Was it more about his body position at the moment the pass was released from Liam? If so, I didn't notice if he was even with them at the time and sped through to get the ball.

The bold. Offsides are from when the pass was released

Edit: you also have to be past the halfway line and in the opponents half for it to be offside, and David was still in Canada's end when the pass happened

Offside position
It is not an offence to be in an offside position.

A player is in an offside position if:
  • any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
  • any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent

Yep, I watched the replay again and David was on our end of the pitch when the ball was released, so that's why it wasn't offside:

One other thing to note if you are not familiar with the nuances of offside is that it's based on the last 2 players back, including the keeper. Often times people think it's just the last defender back, but sometimes the goalie pushing up or coming out of the box can lead to some funny offside calls.

I was so confused by this a while back on a corner kick goal that was called offside on a botched attempt by the goalie to come out to pick it off. He only got a piece the ball bounced around off an offensive player to another offensive player who scored, but there was only 1 defender left along the goal line at the time and the guy who scored as like 6 inches from the goal line when the ball went off his teammate. Goalie was 3 or 4 yards out of the net. Took me a while to realize why that was offside

I think someone already mentioned it but the only thing that matters in soccer is where you are when the ball is kicked up field from the passer. In this case they were in their own half so that's allowed. After that you can go run as much as you want.

That whole play was unreal. The pass and then David getting it and controlling it for the touch over the goalie is a world class play.
