He was a AHL/NHL tweener until last season. With Hedman back he was at best #5, and fighting D'Astous and Lilleberg for ice time. In my opinion his new contact is 4 years too long and $3m overpaid.

Very interesting.

So he was an AHL player playing 73 games the year before and 82 games the year before that. BTW those years he averaged 17 minutes and 19 minutes of ice time a game so solidly top 4 minutes and most of it was 5v5. This is all three years on a 100 point team.

These are the type of comments people meme about how someone became terrible overnight once they sign with the Leafs lol

You're talking about Raddysh like you know what you'll get the next five years. You don't. Now he's your highest paid D, essentially building your defense around him. Lol.
And Florida knows what it will get from Marchand in 5 years, which is nothing. No one has claimed that giving 8 years to raddysh is some kind of brilliant move, but the fact that you can't even acknowledge that paying Brad Marchand until he's in his 40's might not be the best contract says something. They are all bad contracts.

Marchand was playing at a Conn Smythe level a year ago. As a 5M player I'm pretty sure we'll get a couple of good seasons out of him. Same with Ek. Raddysh could be a total bust immediately from year one.

Okay, you win. Everything Florida does is great and everything Toronto does is terrible. Meanwhile, when raddysh is making $3.3 million in actual dollars when he is 36, I'm sure it will be impossible for the leafs to trade him. What team could possibly want to take on that financial burden?

10 years ago he was GM of an incompetent organization. He is not now.

Remains to be seen.

I don't think the deal is all that bad though. He's a good player, they need defence (though his defence ironically is not great), and you have to overpay sometimes. They don't have a 1st for the next two years, may as well go for it in that time.

They desperately need defence that can move the puck from the back end and that is what he can do.

No, you can't. Where did relying on Marchand get Florida last season? At the end of the day, the contract to each of Marchand. Eklbad and Raddysh are equally irrational because none of them can maintain a high level of play by the end of these contracts. That's just the nature of signing a professional athlete to a long term contract at that age. You hope to get a few good years out of it and then worry about the rest of it later.
These signings of older players are only rational for teams trying to maintain a level of excellence, knowing the dropoff will come later, at a point where team performance is expected to decline regardless.

OTOH, the Leafs got a surprise gift of a #1 overall and really should be planning around that for a rebuild, not signing guys who will get in the way once it's time to rebuild around McKenna and Knies.

Tampa's offer was 5 Years at 5.5 aav. So I don't blame hit at all for leaving and taking 8 years at 8.5 aav.
Rumour has it their last offer was 6x6.5 and they were told he was going to UFA. It’s a pretty well known fact regardless that this was another Pyjama situation.

the cap maybe goes up by 20% the next few years, Raddysh will be anchor with contract if he doesn't do what he did this year. You should hope that he doesn't go back to being a 30 point player who's more suspect defensively than Rielly.

During free agency the Leafs will overpay like every one else.
