Confirmed with Link: TOR sign Jimmy Vesey (1 year, 900K)

Backup plan if they are they sending Robertson down? Hate to see that happen. Vesey hasn't really lived up to all the hype of being a top 6. But a decent option on the bottom 6. 15 goals 30 points. He's big, produces about 80 hits on a full schedule, which isn't too bad for a 3rd liner. Not great advanced numbers though. Pretty meh on this one especially if it means Robertson is sent down for more seasoning.

Low risk solid 3rd line addition. But so many of you guys expecting a 2nd liner out of him is odd. He's a 3rd liner all day long. If there's such thing as a poor man's Hyman this is it. I'd give a gifted Robertson every opportunity on the 2nd line before him. I wanted something closer to Hyman or at least a guy that can create space and grind the boards to open up the ice for more skilled guys. This guy has always seemed more of a wanna be skill guy to me.

And for the record his size isn't used to hit guys or be gritty. He averages below a hit a game. Not what I wanted for our third line but a solid add to play with (underrated) Kerfoot, I guess.

I’ve been on-board for NickRob taking one more year to dominate junior, and sliding his ELC that extra year.
He’s still likely available for the playoffs.

There won't be a year for the OHL. This a very unique year for a very unique asset like Nick. I'd keep him up or try to get him a spot in Europe if I was Dubas. He's outplayed the OHL anyway.

I’m not sure about loans for players in his situation, with OHL eligibility?

What a world we live in. Totally slipped my mind about the OHL. Better to have him with the Leafs than not play anywhere.

Doesn't that just mean that they could just sign him cheaper than what he could be awarded in arbitration like we were thinking with Rodriguez?

Kyle Dubas on not tendering Gauthier: "We just felt that as we learned more and more about the guys going to market...we were going to look for a change at that part of our lineup. And at the same time, do right by Fred."

It's over

Yeah, this is a valid point. The Leafs want their guys playing where possible.
I still value his ELC sliding to the max, but it’s a problem that needs solving.

It's over for Bozo

The more I let this sink in it makes perfect sense to use Vesy over Robertson at least to start the season. Nick can be insurance back in jr or brought up to the big club in the second half of the season.
Why rush to young kid if you don't have to.

honestly i would really go big on top stars and pay them...there seems to be solid bottom 6 and 3rd pair depth pieces for 700-1.5 in league or overseas every offseason

This off season is an anomaly because of the financial hardship many teams are facing due to the pandemic. There normally aren't this many quality depth players available at bargain bin prices in the UFA market.

I have to think that if the OHL gets cancelled that there will be a dispensation allowing players like Robertson to play in the AHL. I think it would be irresponsible otherwise imo.

you can't bring a player up from the OHL until the season is over. It's also not rushing him if he's ready, which he clearly is

I was thinking about this last night, might be a solid pick up for depth, but indirectly

Vesey may not be a true top 6 forward, but he can score. JT is already a puckhound and doesnt need a Hyman type on his line.

Vesey can move into that LW spot alongside JT and Nylander, probably his best linemates of his career, perhaps pots 20G/40Pts and most importantly, moves Mikheyev to the 3rd line to improve depth.

Ditto can be said about Robertson/Marner moving Hyman down as well.

Robertson - Matthews - Marner
Vesey - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Hyman

Looks like a solid top 9
