They could have got Grubauer for an extra 2.1 million per year. Are we really going to sign an impactful forward for 2 million? No probably not. Mrazek doesn't provide me a whole of confidence tbh.

Can you imagine this board if we signed Grubauer for 6m. Ha, might as well have kept Andy at 4.5 if that were the case.

What kind of nonsense is this? We haven't had prime Fred since 2018. Freddy has been terrible for 2 years straight, his numbers have him near the bottom 20% in goaltenders.

How are there Leaf fans who still think 2016-2018 Freddy plays here? I wouldn't have had him back at 1M/year.
What part is nonsense. I literally call him prime Fred and non-prime Fred in here. Probably misread what I'm saying.

I don't think the goaltending situation is ideal. Campbell and Mrazek have both shown capability, but the probability that they provide consistent elite goaltending is not that great based on past performance.

Mrazek though might be an upgrade on what Andersen has provided the Leafs for about the last two years.

TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs wasted no time filling their No. 1 need in free agency Wednesday.

The club has agreed to a three-year contract with UFA Petr Mrazek, who walks from the Carolina Hurricanes for a new deal worth $3.8 million annually.

"It was an easy choice," Mrazek said. “It’s every single night you’re on the radar. I’m excited.”

Former Maple Leaf Frederik Andersen has signed with the Hurricanes for two years and $9 million, completing a UFA goalie swap. Carolina also agreed to a deal with UFA Antti Raanta, forming a completely new tandem.

“We need to find a competent partner for Jack Campbell and let them battle it out. Obviously, Jack had a great season. We have a lot of belief in Jack and look forward to him continuing to take steps next year. But we need to address that,” Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas said last week.

“It is making sure we are bolstered on that end to set the goalies up for success.”

Mrazek, 29, is well accustomed to playing in a 1A/1B tandem and is set to enter the season with more security, experience and bigger paycheques than Campbell, whose $1.65-million contract ends in 2022.

Mrazek posted a 6-2-3 record with three shutouts and a .923 save percentage for the Hurricanes in an injury-plagued 2020-21.

He underwent surgery on his right thumb in February and returned in April.

The Czech goaltender admitted some anxiety entering the goalie carousel but is encouraged by the prospects of contributing to a high-scoring squad.

"Hopefully get as many wins as I can, to get better every day. I think the last three seasons I established myself in a position that I finally learned how important games," said Mrazek, who has already texted his girlfriend for advice on a new sweater number (34 is reserved).

"Always when you play Toronto, the fans are great."

This is insurance for Campbell. Not hard to figure out.

You dont waste 3.8 million on insurance, not hard to figure out.

Theres always going to be goalies like this available somewhere, so you get campbell a 1b see if he earns his spot and if not you acquire this guy at the deadline.

He does have a NHL hockey team. You are just here to complain. Nobody will take you seriously with that username.

I dont care what you think of my username, we dont have a competent 3rd line or top 6 left wing. You cant just plug in robertson and bunting and be a competitive team after losing hyman.

There's one guy in the league that provides consistent elite goaltending and he costs 9.5 mil.

We played without him for long stretches every one of the last few years. How we play without him is not a mystery, we've seen a lot of it. There's no big drop off.

Quite a mature user name.

Hes done a terrible job, he overpays players and hasnt gotten any further than lou who was at the start of a rebuild facing stiffer competition.

"But montreal went to the cup finals and injuries" the leafs were still winning games with the injuries and losing to teams like them and columbus isnt acceptable. Hopefully this year goes fast so he can be the worlds greatest scout somewhere.

Lol Matthews should give his jersey number to Mrazek

And they win without matthews in the lineup either, when you cant get out of the first round moneyballing glorified 3rd liners into first line roles isnt the way to build a team.

I can hint as to why it's .905%. Go with a 3 year, and it jumps to .914%. That one year in Philly 4 years ago was awful for both him and the team. The rest of the years he's a pretty average to good starter.

I am not sure what will happen in a years time but maybe Campbell is re-signed, maybe Mrazek is traded, maybe both are kept... But right now, it's a pretty fair deal.

We needed a goaltender we got one.
You don’t just get to remove his bad years and keep his good ones. Remove his best season and what are his stats.
In most years in Carolina he was out performed by James Reimer who just signed for less with less term.
Yes we needed a goalie and we got one but that is a damn low bar to hit. We paid too much for too long on a below average goalie who’s numbers were inflated behind one of the best D cores in the league.

And reimer wouldve been a great choice, but big brain kyle saw some analytics and decided to throw the bag at him.

At some point youd think shanahan or someone higher up would step in and stop this guy, but nope now we have 3.8 in a 1b goalie. Pumped.

He's done a terrific job. He sets his team up well and solves issues. No he isn't the worst GM in history.

It shows you aren't here to be objective.

It's not about removing it, it's to provide context. Context matters. Awful years happen and he had an awful year 4 years ago. When you deep dive the numbers, Mrazek is among the average among the starters... so this is really not a huge deal

The analytics comment is you pushing a narrative. Keep throwing nicknames, it makes you look desparate.
