I'm pretty surprised he didn't get a deal around a million a season as he is EXCELLENT defensively. However this is probably only a PTO out of need until the Leafs can make a little more room, I'd be surprised if we don't sign him.
Why not just wait and sign him once the room was made?

It’s a PTO. there is no money unless he makes the team.

I know. What I'm saying is the deal he likely ends up signing with the Leafs after the pto is over will be for the same amount of money he would have made on another team.

I read the situation as the team wanting him there for camp, but aren't sure if the Sandin contract will be finalized by then. And the Leafs and ZAR have a handshake deal in place for a normal contract

Why does the Sandin contract affect this? I would think whatever they are/have been doing is with the assumption that Sandin would be signed.

Because they don't know what Sandin' final aav will be yet, which will in turn determine which player/players need to be moved out to make room for him (and now it seems ZAR)

I'd imagine the Leafs don't want to be officially over the cap heading into any trade negotiation to avoid being squeezed by the other team

I would hope they would have a pretty good idea what it will come in as.

I wonder if there's a back pocket deal for ZAR, and conversely, a drop dead date for Ol' Rasmus.

Nobody in the actual NHL cares about his “EXCELLENT” defensive metrics.

That’s why he got a PTO. Also I imagine Leafs already have a handshake deal.

Any thoughts on why he accepted a PTO?
Shirley some team must have offered him at least a minimum contract.
There is ZERO chance he took this PTO with us without getting a wink and a nod from management and a brief discussion around $$$ and opportunity.

ZAR could sign a PTO with any team, he chose T.O. to sign here IMO.

Can't another team technically sign him to a contract at any time?
Yep. If he agrees

I say 1 year deal

1 goal in 23 playoff games. Pretty shit. It’s a PTO at least so nothing to care too much about but that statistically isn’t any improvement over what we already got.

Sure, any team can. A PTO essentially, is an invite to training camp - insurance. He can also be released at anytime. He doesn't even count as a contract slot.

Well... this way he gets to join at the start of training camp... and get comfortable with his new surroundings, systems and teammates. I really don't see a downside here.

Might have a 'deal' get ~950K if he makes the Leafs or ~750K AHL deal if he doesn't.

Zero risk for the Leafs. If he makes it then he looked better in camp than he has for a large part of his stay in the NHL thus far.

If he doesn't make the Leafs pen him to an AHL deal (think Ho Sang) and let him play there. If things work out an he looks good / they need a body in the NHL sign him to an NHL deal. Easy

I agree there would have been a discussion. Why sign a PTO two weeks before camp though if a contract has been worked out?

No certainly no downside. I’m not against this, just trying to understand the thinking behind it.

Dubas will sign him and try to send him down to the Marlies and poof just like Kaiser Soze he will be gone……..let’s see how many get the ….Kaiser Soze reference. :)

I think we are @ 48 of 50 contracts before ZAR.
How troublesome is that for Dubas?
Dubas can and he will make more contract spots……..
