I think the leafs need to stop thinking about signing players just to trade them and thinking about signing players that will help their team win over the next few years.

The goal of signing a player shouldn't be to get more draft picks at TDL, it should be that the player will help contribute to the team winning and pushing it forward.

So, we should give Russell 5x5+?

We just signed Rielly to a long term deal.

The people that invent issues with a 1 year deal on a gritty no 6 dman are out of control

So far in the last few weeks the leafs have added Matthews,Andersen and Martin. I going out on a limb and saying they won't flip them for a draft pick at the TDL. They may just help us win going forward.

what defense man that is available right now would have been a useful signing down the road?. Most are older or right around the same skill level of polak . He already knows the team and the system they run. Why not bring him back till an actual good quality defense man becomes available via trade or next year ufa.

They did add a goalie for now and the future recently and signed him long term.
Who is worth the money signed on July 1st? I don't see adding a Lucic or Ladd as helping them.

It's not inventing an issue when we lose a better, younger defenceman for a total scrub in Polak.

Polak was a good warrior for the Leafs. All indications were that he wanted to stay here and that he would love to come back.

This sounds like a goodwill contract for Polak. You played hard for us, brought us back a decent return, was very professional about the trade so now it's time for us to pay you back a little.

How dare you make sense?

Everyone here just to pick on the Leafs, Polak is the patsy. Because you know we didn't need anyone to stand up for the kids, they don't need mentors, they don't need anyone to show the ropes. Especially a guy who just played in the Stanly Cup finals and been a good citizen for the Leafs.

Yeah what a dumb signing. Huge risk on a one year deal at probably a low cap hit, especially for a team who won't be near the cap ceiling. They'll even get another draft pick for him at the deadline. Idiots.

Don't mind them, considering we have the largest fan base in the league we also have the largest population of morons. Martin and Polak are decent signings. Martin is good all around and polak is 1yr and also can easily be flipped for more picks. Win Win

Under all the ufa's this year who should they have signed? Consider the ridiculous contracts they all got and the need of the team. IMO no one.

Why hasn't the salary for this contract been posted yet? If it is 2.5 million then it should be mentioned in the thread title.

I wonder, had he stayed in Toronto... would he have gotten a much bigger payday? Seems like the playoffs really snuffed out his value.

I mean they were in last by a single point in a relatively injury filled season, half of which was played by a goalie having a historically bad year until the last month or so. Call it a hunch but I don't expect Andersen to be as bad as Sparks or first-half Bernier. They're also going to be playing high end rookies who have already shown themselves capable of scoring at the NHL level instead of Parenteau, Matthias, Spaling and co.

It's overwhelmingly likely to be a bottom-10 finish no question, but they needed a lot of things to go wrong to finish 1 point behind the Oilers last year, it's not reasonable to expect another last place finish.

You really think Anderson will perform better than Reimer did in the 1st half? If not for Reimers first half heroics leafs would have been double digits out of 29th. Leafs d is awful there log jamed at forward with plugs having very little spots for there young guys, Leafs are in trouble bottom 4 I'm guessing, which is a blessing

Lou said he wasn't interested in paying the money that was being thrown around, so he and the team is just staying the course. Which is developing from within.

I cringe to think about how much snow and bodies, Anderson would have to deal with in his crease after a save, without Matt Martin and Roman Polak on the leafs.

The leafs have a ton of Rookies and a number of 1 year and done character with the exception of Komarov, Martin.

In this offseason we got:

1.) A potential first line centre
2.) A 1A Goalie
3.) Signed the best Dman not playing in the NHL
4.) we didn't sign old UFA to stupid length contracts for too much money

We still don't really know what we have as a team, better to see how everybody performs and potentially get another lottery pick than go all out before we have a true handle on what we have. They are only into year 2 of this rebuild. Considering we got rid of Clarkson, Phaneuf and Kessel (almost 20 million in cap soace) and all we had to do was retain 1.2 million plus we got Andersen, Rychel, Lindberg, Kapanen and another second I say they have done enough.
