He was a pending RFA. Doesn't matter if we did it now or later.
Only pending UFA's don't make sense to sign right now, because they can just walk from Seattle if they don't want to be there. Dermott can't do that.

I could be completely wrong, but I think part of the rules to be compliant for expansion is to have a certain amount of players at each position under contract
D core is likely set for next season

Unless they have a deal lined up doesn’t this mean they’ll need to protect Dermott in the expansion draft

He would need to be protected regardless if they want to keep him.
Seattle would just select him as an RFA and negotiate his contract, but it isn't the same as a UFA, it would make less sense if he was a UFA to do this.

They didn't meet to exposure requirements to protect 8 skaters until this deal was signed.
