Hahah please.

- Made more than McDavid when you factor in the cap hit with term

- All in signing bonus so that should have gotten a discount

- No major awards unlike all the comparables being used (Ovi, Sid, and McDavid)

- Walks him right to UFA

Garbage. **** him.

Eichel got 10 million for scoring what, 100 points in 2 seasons?

Real big concern....desperate much?

Not an ideal contract but could have been worse.

Makes the contract buyout proof. You now have TWO huge contracts that are essentially buyout proof. Both are generational talents but **** happens and stacking buyout proof contracts is a recipe for disaster.

LOL. Buying out those two guys is problem number 101 on the list of top 100 problems.

My gripe isn't the 5 years in itself, it's that doing a shorter contract should bring along a palatable AAV.

This one certainly does not. It's a bad deal and a weak negotiation by Dubas.

There was nothing to negotiate. If someone would pay that much for Matthews, then that's what he can demand (and he did). Elite talents get elite compensation.

This means Matthews + Marner will almost certainly be more than $20M combined, meaning the Leafs almost certainly need to trade Nylander before next season.

I mean - it's not a totally awful contract because he's not going to suck or anything, so it's not like, say - David Backes contract. But this is a huge overpayment for not enough term. He's being paid like the second best player in the league and he ain't that, and you don't even get 8 years out of it.

Bad contract.

Remember when there was no way Dubas couldn't sign all 3 kids? I 'member...

What you just said is a double negative, and Toronto is looking like they'll be over the cap with 7 or 8 roster spots to fill.

But congrats on giving Nylander $7M to not even put up half a PPG. :thumbu:

What is everyone talking about saying that this takes him to UFA?

I thought UFA was after his 3rd contract for hitting age 27.

This contract does neither of those.
"Any player whose contract has expired can declare himself an unrestricted free agent if he is at least 27 years old or has at least seven years playing as an NHL player."

OUCH. It looks like Dubas hired Chia as advisor.

Behind muzzin and Rielly. Who’s going to play d for this team next year?
Dermott has been terrific, he'll move into Gardiner's spot and probably carry the 2nd pairing. He's done that with a larger 3rd pairing role than the one he had last year, and has played really well when getting the chance to play up the lineup

It looks like Dubas caved a bit to avoid a Nylander scenario.

The AAV is palatable, but not at that term.
