Barely made the playoffs? Riiiiight. This team essentially had their playoff spot and 1st round matchup with Boston locked up months before the end of the season. They were just coasting at the end of the year because they had nothing to play for. They weren't catching TB and MTL wasn't catching them. No they don't have a massively improved team from last year, but they don't need to be. This team on paper is one of the best in the entire league which is why they're #2 in the Vegas odds to win the cup right now.

You're also completely disregarding their biggest source of improvement: the development of our young early 20's aged core. Not to mention for some reason you're assuming guys like Mikheyev or Moore are contributing "next to nothing" just because they don't make a lot of money? This roster doesn't just have star power; it's got two 40+ point players lined up to play on their 3rd line right now. That's some pretty decent depth. You're so far off on your analysis here.
Yes, Montreal was so far behind the leafs; that if the leafs, didn't get a point in the game before the last game of the season, a Montreal win would have eliminated them. Without getting that point before the last game, Montreal might have actually iced a team other than their AHL roster.

Yep. Terrified. Have the core players locked up for 3-6 years. Have 11-14 million to spend on 2 d next year.
And have a really high 2nd round pick next year. Who needs 3rd, 4th dman anyway, three or four guys from the refuse bin will do...

1.) the AHL player in that game won it for you.

2.) Montreal was up 3-0 on the leafs in a head to head game that choked away the lead that cost them the playoffs.

Pretty sure it has been explained roughly 4,799,344 times over the last 3-4 months that we are fine cap wise
You know if 100 people are saying that there's going to be a cap issue and 20 people are saying no there isn't... don't you think that the 100 people might be right and the 20 people wrong? Particularly when those 20 people are all Leaf fans and its they're only hope for the future that they are right and the 100 are wrong?
Give it up. When the majority says something is true... its usually true. You can't invest 49.7% of the team's salary cap space in 17% of the team and not expect there to be serious issues down the road.

Did you even read what I just wrote? Or follow the standings at all last season? Toronto had a 10 point lead on MTL in mid-March. There was nothing left to play for at that point because a matchup with Boston was all but guaranteed for them.

I will bet; that, the backup goaltender will be no worse than the starting goaltender. Both will be as bad as the team in front of them, and not good enough to get them into the playoffs.

You think the Leafs will miss the playoffs?

this is the worst string of bad takes ive ever seen.

leafs had a playoff spot all but assured in march. they are 100% making the playoffs this year, the habs need a miracle.
try harder

This is just an insane statement, especially when we are talking about rival fans on a message board, most of them horribly misinformed.

The information is available to everybody and very clear. There are no cap problems. Leafs will be fine, and are cup contenders for the foreseeable future.

I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, but it's reality.

How does that work? Was there a stipulation on the Marleau trade?

yup. top 10 protected. this guy is predicting a team with a core of Matthews,Tavares,Marner, Nylander, Rielly,Barrie,Muzzin and Andersen is gonna be a BOTTOM 10 team lol.

Not only miss the playoffs but keep their frist round pick...
this is the worst take I've ever seen on this site.
shades of the guy who bet the leafs would have the worst offense in the league by far in 2016-2017
claiming the leafs are gonna be bottom 10 is borderline trolling

Oh my god. That was so stupid I didn’t even understand the depths of the stupidity

Sorry no, The only thing we agree on is that Marner and Nylander don't get hurt. Hard to get hurt when you are button hooking or throwing the puck away before anyone cames within ten feet of you.

This is just getting sad.

The Habs were so close, practically as good as the Leafs last year, according to Habs fans. Yeah, they've actually convinced themselves of this. I mean let's just ignore how the Leafs were on cruise control the last month plus last season.

I do think Montreal might make the playoffs.

The playoff seeding is so weird, it’s difficult for me to keep track of who is competing with who, then wild cards get added .... it needs to change imo

It was a long, emotional process, but it feels amazing to have the best young core in hockey locked up.

This will probably be the best Leaf team many of us will have ever seen, and I couldn't be more excited!

After 2000+ posts I risk repeating the thoughts of others, but I add my congratulations to the long suffering Leaf fans.

Having a core of young talent under contract for the next 5 years is what you deserve as an original franchise. I hope that a butterfly effect is created where, as this core matures, their influence accelerates the development of prospects.

As a fan of all the Canadian teams I hope to see playoffs in the near future. As for the cost of securing a core of talent, I agree that is a high % of the cap, but what a great problem for a team to have with so many young stars & 1 in his prime.

Again, congratulations on your rebuilding process. Looking forward to the other RFA’s signing well before puck drop!

Yet, Leafs management (sure Carolina didn't ask for it) put that stipulation in. Guess their stupidity must be up with mine...
