Leafs being the Leafs I guess. I wouldn't have offered anything over two years of Tanev. Love the guy, but he's already nearing the end of his career. Six years is darn near inconceivable from an NHL GM.

/shuts down Eichel and MacKinnon in the playoffs with the best expected goals against in the league

"yeah this guys near the end of his career"

I bet this one is on the NHL radar for cap recapture, one of the main strengths in the argument they used against Parise and Suter was that they were signed into their 40’s, historically very, very few players are still going in their 41 year old seasons.

There is also a precedent for the league not allowing LTIR in these scenarios, again, the Wild were informed that neither Suter or Parise would ever be eligible for LTIR relief prior to the buyouts. I could see this one coming back to sting Toronto in the not so distant future.

Pretty giga-brain stuff. He will almost certainly LTIRetire at some point during this deal. Kinda borders on cap circumvention tbh, we all know he ain't playing till 40 lmao

As for the player Toronto gets today, well, they haven't had a defensive defenseman of this caliber for basically the entire big four era, so it's a pretty significant upgrade. I'm really interested to see what kind of team we get out of the Leafs this year, between the coaching change and the addition of Tanev+OEL.

This one surely goes to LTIR. I Wonder how that feels as a player. Knowing your body will fall apart.
It litterary says; we will garantue you money as youre body will get done.

I dont know If its good for Tanev or not. He will be teared Down.
Nut HR will get trusted, and get much minuter.

I think Toronto should settle for two defensiven specialister, and not only one. Its not the 70-80s anymore.
Trade a D, get one more D specialist.

Yeah out of all the contracts signed today... this is one seems the sketchiest that does not pass the smell test at first.

But his injuries to my knowledge have all been breaks and fractures and whatnot from the way he plays, missing like 8 to 20 games here and there as opposed to huge chunks of time

lmao SIX years for an over the hill 34 yr old Tanev whose 1 hit away from LTIR
This would be preferable to watching the slow decline of a 34 year old player. If he can play, it's going to be ugly. These type of D men can fall off the cliff at any time. Obviously the Leafs are paying him for immediate help, and they will cross that bridge when Tanev either falls off the cliff or if LTIR is still in existance.

Yep one big hit is what Toronto is betting on.

A tweaked ankle that bothers him for years will be much more damaging

Have people not realized yet the leafs will find a way out of it when they need to. 6 years doesn’t actually mean they’ll have him 6 years lol. It’s more so just his financial security for the next 6 years
Exactly this…when Toronto is done with him he will be off the books and out the door. Toronto is the richest team in the NHL and this deal is nothing more than financial security for Tanev. The Leafs will get a few good years out of him. The six-year contract means nothing.
