I can agree, but TOO many trades is entering the territory of looking to buy a championship. Kind of like teams do in the joke that is the modern NBA.

do you realize how stupid this comment is? There is never too many trades. You make as many moves as you can to win a cup.

do you think anyone in Tampa gives a shit that Brisbois made about 5 transactions at last years deadline? No.

Even if you feel that Foligno is a better fit here than Hall, the fact that Foligno cost us a 1st and Boston got Hall for merely a 2nd, and NYI got Palmeri+Zajac for a 1st...we significantly overpaid.

Zajac is hot garbage and has a brutal contract

I seriously thought this Folingo trade would keep everyone on HF leafs happy, and it's only now that I'm realizing that some people will never be happy.
But for real folks, haven't we had enough of the one dimensional Taylor Hall style that are fairly ineffective in the playoffs? Haven't we been screaming for more grit, defense, leadership and passion to get us through the playoffs? That's why we choose Folingo over Hall, just like many other teams would have if they'd been given the opportunity.

Hall would be ripped to shreds here if he was given 5 minutes of ice time with his effort level.
Folingo will become loved by all and be a warrior for the leafs.

Potential vs being stuck on a dumstper fire.

Jack freaking Eichel has 2g this season. He's better then that.
Hall has a NMC. He got to pick where he wanted to go which drastically limits the return.

Same thing happened when the Leafs had to trade Kessel but that trade kind of worked out in the end.

Even if Hall plays great on Boston he would not have fit with our lineup. He’s a puck (hog) carrier and we are better served having Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares and Rielly do that already. In the playoffs we need people to get the puck back. I like Foligno for that.

Foligno is exactly what this team needs. A heart and soul guy who will do everything on the ice needed to win. A late first/practically second rounder for something identified as a need to go far in the playoffs? A no-brainer people.

The last time we had a Foligno we were a Fraser missed call from making it to the Finals. I remember Foligno chastising someone for throwing their Leaf jersey on the floor of the dressing room. That’s character, and the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. This Leaf team now is a more complete team than that 92-93 team with more skill.

I am not sure Foligno will add that much, and I don't care that we gave up a first rounder. I see the point that Hall was not really a fit for our team, as the first line has Marner and the second line has Nylander to carry the puck.
What made me ecstatic was getting Rittich as a back up to Soupster. I had little faith that all of Freddy's issues are his groin, and having him on LTIR to the season end suits me fine. Next year we can go with Soupmonster and whomever makes sense to sign, be it Rittich, or Ullmark, or name your goalie here.
In my opinion that was our real lack of depth position, solved now for a 3rd rounder.

I think it’s Keefe who likes the grit on his roster. My understanding is that this is consistent with the Marlies rosters he’s had as well. I trust Dubas and Keefe to know exactly what the value is that these guys bring and to manage the prospect cupboard responsibly.

Paying a 1st for Foligno feels steep compared to other deals out there, but I think most that are up in arms about it are more concerned with dick measuring contests on the mainboards than they are with whether or not a late 1st is an acceptable price to get what foligno brings, in context with what other options are available, including the prospect of doing nothing.

Hall was the sexy name, but Foligno without a doubt is a better fit in terms of need. And he adds versatility since he can play up and down in the top 9 and bring elements of physicality and strong defense.

Plus I wonder if Galchenyuk's solid play was a factor. He's shown the ability to play up on the top 2 lines and help generate chances.

Regardless losing a first stings more when Hall goes for a 2nd but this draft will be more of a crapshoot than it has in previous years due to COVID. An overpayment? Yes but not drastic and the Leafs' leave their prospect pool in tact. Trades can still happen after the season, as we saw last year, to get back into the first round.

Dubas' seems to have learned in his first two playoff runs the importance of physicality, grit, leadership, and room chemistry. Hall's history on the team's he's played for largely brings into question his ability to gel with the room. If Dubas brings him in instead and the Leafs' bow out early, there would be a bigger uproar.

Now Boston has a great supporting leadership to insulate Hall, however, he's being asked to save their secondary offense which could be a task. They brought in Rick Nash a few years ago and it didn't do much for them. They have an uphill battle in their division to make to to the Conference Finals though.

Finally - bringing in Hall means no Rittich in all likeliness, and you have to think Dubas' knew about Andersen's injuries which drove his decisions.

At first I really wasn't a fan of the price, but I've come to terms with it. This is the best team we've iced in a very long time and due to the divisional realignment there's a good opportunity to go deep this year. Which means the first is likely a late first, in a draft year where scouting has been hindered.

Foligno is also a good fit, better I would argue than Taylor Hall would have been. Veteran who can easily play on the second or third line, good defensively, hard worker.

I also think it sends the right message to our club that we're prepared to take our shot. Shows a lot of faith in the young group. Could be good experience if we go deep, which is something you cannot really put a price tag on.

This was exactly my thinking. In a vacuum and looking exclusively at talent - would I rather give up a 2nd for Hall than 1st for Foligno? Yes, no doubt there. But when you take all aspects of the game into account, I don't want to expend assets on another pure skill primmadonna with questionable effort and defensive buy-in, we've had enough of those the past few seasons.

The more I think about this deal the more I like it, given where we are & where this could put us.
Plus, Dubas knows this probably may end up being his last kick at the can in T.O. so went for broke.

Having said all that, we most likely be having a field day with other fans had their GM pulled such a stunt.

I would not doubt multiple teams were willing to give up a first.

leafs wanted their guy and got him. This is such a crap shoot year for drafting and (hopefully) we should have a late pick.

grit baby let’s go
Yep, was out there everywhere that Hall wasn't getting bites for a 1st and that Foligno had 3 teams offering up their 1sts. Supply and demand.

Bringing in Hall would have made no sense.

Theoretically, you bring in Hall to give you more offense. But we have lots of offense, and he has 2 goals this year. We'd have to take time away from our big guns to "get him going" and find chemistry etc, while we have better options in the first place.
