Some thoughts
I was at the game. I thought the Atmosphere was about the same as it was especially early in the year. Likely wearing a mask will subdue you a bit more.
PLD/Svech/Connor - Thought they were pretty good. Connor is just flat playing some of his best hockey so far. PLD was a bull and one of the few forwards that willing will take the puck to the net. Svech was solid, I think I would like to see him on the PP in front of the net. Hopefully they get a run together but likely not
Stats/Ehlers/Copp - Stats looks like an old man. He can still be positional sound but he seems behind the play so far. Ehlers was shooting a lot but he's off in a lot of areas. He can still get the puck out and in like nobody else on the team though. Copp is a solid forward on any line he plays. Again one of the few forwards that we have that will take the puck to the net. Scored a beaut by going to the net.
Lowry/Vesa/Harkins - They kind of drove me nuts because there are times when they should be shooting the puck and they don't and times when they should be cycling and they try to shoot. They had 1 SOG and it was a cannon from Vesa. Just shoot the puck and jam the net guys you will score if you do that.
Nash/Toninato - Safe is the best way to describe these two. I think Toninato adds more to the 4th line then anyone else right now. There is no flow to there game with out proper linemates.
Morrissey/Schmidt - Really good in the O zone. I think they got chasing and trying to make too many cutsy passes in the D zone though. Against a better team they would have got burnt
Pionk/Dillon - Thought they settled down as the game went along and were solid. Pionk was a bit chicken with his head cut off early. Dillon hate the system. I can just tell watching go off the ice and complain to Huddy about it. He was vocal to him on the bench and I am just assuming that is what it was about
Stanly/Demelo - Solid showing from the bottom pair. Stanley was physical with out trying to be to cute. Demelo was his solid self.
Overall though the big issue is system play. At first glance they looked to be using a modifed zone coverage but when the D started to move all over the ice, I could see the same system was still in place. I counted 12 times in the 1st we gave the puck in between the blueline and the top of the circles. At least half those times we had 2 forwards jumping the zone. Anaheim almost always got a shot on net because of that. We can't expect our players to be better when they don't have a system that allows them to be better. We often would spend 30 seconds a shift trying to get a puck out and you can't generate offense after working for 30 seconds.
This was a game very similar to others except Helly was very good and we won.
