Proposal: Top 6 Center to STL

The Blues very much have a current weakness down the middle, while being pretty wing heavy. Schenn would be better off either as the 3C, or on the wing at this point.

Dvorsky is on the way, but I can’t see the Blues immediately rushing him into a top 6 role.

Would Brandon Saad+Zack Bolduc+pick(s)+maybe another prospect be enough to move one of your C’s?


The idea would be to have this as the forward group next season:

Buchnevich-Thomas-Kyrou/Snuggerud
Holloway-TBD-Snuggerud/Kyrou
Neighbours-Dvorsky-Schenn
Toropchenko-Dean/UFA-Joseph
Sundqvist, Walker

I don’t think we’re in position to add a top 6 c and be a contender. I am however on board with adding a high salary short term optional at center assuming the cost is pretty minimal.

I’m not exactly sure who fits that bill and I wouldn’t push beyond a 2 year contract if possible.

The other probably more likely option is Dvorsky joins the team later in the year and him and Schenn fill out the middle 6 center positions.

It’s just too early in the season and the Blues development cycle to move a 1st for a stop gap especially given our playoff route isn’t exactly easy.

That's fine, I don't really understand your point?

From a Blues fan perspective, I think most are perfectly happy with a somewhat competitive team this year along with positive development of young players. In other words, it's OK if they aren't serious contenders this year.

Given how well his season is going in the AHL, it's possible Dvorsky is ready for the NHL sometime later this season. But Dvorsky is way too valuable to the franchise long term to risk damaging his development by rushing him to the NHL.

The Blues knew Buchnevich at center was a bandage. Acquiring a center wouldn't really have blocked Dvorsky, so they probably didn't like the market.

So, what has changed? Are the Blues good enough that the going rate is now worth it? Or has the market changed or someone new is available?

I'm in favor of adding quality at basically all positions, but the answers to those questions aren't very clear to me.

Nah, even with injuries we have plenty of bodies on defense right now. Our biggest need is definitely a center.

If Isles move on from Nelson he could fit the bill in UFA. Doesn’t sound like you’d be willing to pay his expected value to get him before that though.

This is kind of where I'm at. I am open to adding but it has to be with the future in mind as well, I don't think we are at the point of the retool where it is wise to spend any assets on a stop gap or someone who isn't part of the long term plan here. Maybe there is someone out there that fits the bill but I am skeptical that those kinds of players are available mid season. I think the best path is to just hold firm with what we have currently until either Dvorsky shows that he is ready or we find the right guy, which would likely be an off-season move IMO.
