It was like, months ago lol

Congrats on missing the point. He's far from the best available option.

Most teams would rather have a pending UFA then an aging 34 year old d man with 3 (not 2) more years at $6.25M AAV (and higher in actual dollars). A team is buying Petry who is in apparent current decline (arguable) and who will with 95% certainty decline in the next 3 years.

Why does any team want that contract in exchange for a first? Most contenders - who might be inclined to give up a first - are typically capped strapped and don't want that type of contract.

Value is off, largely due to the age and cost-control of the players.

Batherson in particular is a point per game player signed for $5m long term. He's worth more than any D on the Jets.

Especially when Nate Schmidt was dealt for a third round pick twice in the past 2 years.

For this trade, points don't matter. It's about getting a strong defensive defenseman and veteran for the right side.

Severson from the Devils might be available. Not sure if they can / will be able to afford him when he is a UFA after next year.
Devils haze literally zero RHD prospects however besides Walsh (Luke Hughes is a LHD but plahjg right side in Michigan so???)
Devils woild be very thin on the right side but I can still see him being moved possibly if the offer makes sense.

Edit. I see wanting a defensive defenceman. That kinda excludes Severson then

What would the asking price be? I believe he will soon be considered one of the best defenseman in the league. Leafs could definitely use him but I was under the impression that LA had no interest in trading him

The Kings are going to have a serious log jam on the right side. Doughty's not going anywhere, Walker and Roy are signed for a few years, and guys like Clarke, Faber, Durzi, Spence, and Grans, among others, will be forcing their way onto the roster sooner rather than later. Before his ACL injury, Walker was arguably LA's top trade piece, but I'm not sure how much trade value he'll have post-ACL recovery.

I don't think LA is all in for another year or two and Roy probably has a ton of value right now. I'd rather trade him while he's on a great contract (2 more years at $3.15 million) and get back either a high quality left-handed defensive prospect or a scoring winger.\

Not sure all Kings fans would agree with me though. At this point, he's a high end second pairing RHD I think.

Isn't it a little suspect that we want to trade instead of extending him?
No? I mean, I get what you are saying, but would it be that surprising to see a rebuilding team take an asset for an expiring contract when they have the opportunity?

But more importantly, would they have a spot for him next season to keep him? Dahlin, Power, Bryson and Jokiharju have four of the six spots. Fitzgerald would have to clear waivers to return to the AHL and Samuelson would be pushing for a spot if not Johnson too. I’d rather resign Pysyk for cheap as a 6/7 if Miller could return a nice draft pick.

I'd retain down to $4.5M on Petry to get fair value. If there is narratives on stat checking in a season where the Habs are drowning, don't bother. If you value Petry from 34-36/37 at $4.5M, we can talk. And yes, it starts with a late 1st. Acquiring guys like Petry with his size and skating is rare. I have no doubt he can be a top 4D with his term left and if he is in a McDonagh situation, I think that is best for him.

Have you ever seen this guy Dylan DeMelo play?

I'd probably be looking for one of your RHD prospects instead of the picks though but is pretty much exactly what you want, no?

Highly underrated. Stabilizes everyone he plays with, on a decent contract with term and can play up and down the lineup. Won’t wow you with highlight reels but he’s exactly what any team would want to mentor a young player.

And the jets are keeping him so not sure what he’s doin on the trade thread. He was great with Morissey and whatever rookie we bring in.

Mentioned earlier in the thread but Colin Miller is your man. He can shoot the puck. He might not ever actually hit the net but man can he shoot. I think he has to be worth like at least a 5th round pick. Maybe a late 4th. No? Ok 2 sevenths

That's nice, but has very little to do with $6.25 for this year and 2 more until age 36.

"Past performance is no guarantee of future returns"

You see any chance on earth that Melnyk agrees to take on that bloated contract for a declining player? And gives up a 1st to do it? Not to mention Petry’s trade clause...
