Top 10 players to watch at the World Juniors

So Ehlers and Nylander, two guys who were picked after Virtanen in the draft make the list, and Virtanen doesn't even make the honorable mentions?

That kind of slideshows annoy me but I gave it a chance. On fourth page I gave up and quit. Why those annoy me is that they show a tiny piece of information, beg you to click just to get another page with very little information. It's a circle of click-wait-scroll. Even though that kind of slideshows are commonly used, it doesn't mean that it's a good approach. It's against general usability guidelines.

IMO the list is:

Connor McDavid: Simple, he's a draft eligible player with speed, great hands, off the charts hockey IQ, and strong on the puck. Coming off a broken hand, we'll see if he shows up or if the injury rusted him up.

Jack Eichel: In a battle with McDavid for first obviously, got a great shot along with tons more upside and is getting lots of ice time and experience at Boston U.

Martin Reway: Produced huge in last years WJC, and will be a massive factor in Slovakia trying to make an upset.

Kevin Fiala: Nashville prospect with lots of upside will be looking to impress scouts and will be the offensive catalyst for a very stingy Swiss offense.

Kasperi Kapanen: We will see in this tournament if Pittsburgh will have a solid forward to add to the already great team.

Joe Hicketts: Least heard of player on team Canada who virtually came out of nowhere to take the WHL by storm.

Russian Goaltending: Will it be Sorokin or Shestyerkin? Both goaltenders will battle all tournament for the starting job.

Andre Burakovsky: The speedy winger should have no problem putting up points at this tourny, especially with his finesse and knowledge.

Zack Werenski- Projected to go around 20-25 in most mock drafts, this crafty defenseman has a lot of flash in his game and this tournament could add more value to his stock. Watch for Werenski to step up for the Americans in the tourney.

Darnell Nurse- Did the Oilers do the right thing sending him back to juniors? Will he help the struggling Oilers in the future? Just a couple of many questions we could ask about Nurse right now. This big defenseman will look to prove the Oilers wrong in performing highly this WJC.
Is he in?

So Ehlers and Nylander, two guys who were picked after Virtanen in the draft make the list, and Virtanen doesn't even make the honorable mentions?

It's like I said, I could have made the honorable mentions list a lot longer. The whole Canadian team could have been an honourable mention. Ones i definitely should have added are Virtanen, Petan, Morrissey and Nurse. Nothing against Virtanen, but when it comes to individuals on teams, I think Nylander and Ehlers will play huge roles for their team.

Lots of comments about the slideshow/multi-page format. The reason you see this format all over the place is for ad impressions. People will pay per "impression" an ad gets. If a reader goes to one page, and sees 2 ads, the blog gets paid for 2 impressions. If the reader has to click through a dozen pages, they can see 24 ads, and the blog gets paid for 24 impressions. I'm not really a fan of the format either, but it does make blogs a lot more money.

Put me in the list of people who saw slideshow and immediately closed the window.

Players I'm most looking forward to watching (in order)

Connor McDavid
Auston Matthews
Jack Eichel
William Nylander
Jesse Puljujarvi
Nikloaj Ehlers
Pavel Buchnevich
Kasperi Kapanen
Kevin Fiala
Noah Hanifin

So pumped for this tourney!!!

No, Washington decided to hang on to him, and even sent him down to the AHL for a couple of games.

Oh sorry I just saw him on the roster as of like early December or something and thought he would make it. Wasn't 100% sure obviously lol

It's quite difficult to have all the text and pictures on one page without making it look like a 12 year old's bedroom. It's definitely more organized on separate pages.

That's not true at all...I've seen countless websites that have clean looking lists...in fact, your format is the outlier. It might be 'difficult' but given how much content is out there, taking the easy way isn't always best. The real difficulty is on the reader to try to click a link per paragraph on their smartphone. Even 2 pages of 6 or 3 of 4 would have been vastly better. Here's an example:

I'd say both Ville Husso and Kasperi Kapanen are the Finns to watch rather than Juuse Saros, who possibly is playing the second fiddle to Husso anyway. Not that Saros isn't great, it's just that Husso is.

Puljujärvi won't likely be anything special. For a 16 year old, yes, but there are three years older players playing in the tournament.

Who was the last 16 year old who managed to take a big role on his team? Sidney Crosby?

Clicked through a few slides to get you that advertising money but that's as far as I got. Sorry buddy, I can't stand slideshows. I can't see why that couldn't be one page, I think it would actually look quite spiffy with the pictures breaking up the list nicely, but what do I know?

1- McDavid
2- Eichel
3- Nylander

4- any 17 year old wearing a cage has piqued my interest.

Other than that, not interested in anyone else so much.

I'd say Nylander would be number three on my list.

The goalies are nice, but a good goaltending performance is almost irrelevant as a predictor of future success. There have been so many WJC goaltending heroes who have zero NHL success.

This list isn't a predictor of future NHL success though. It's about roles in this tournament.

Demko not a honorable mention? Usa is a top 2 team on paper and Demko is THE player maybe besides Eichel that will be the most valuable to the team if they want to win gold.

Refuse to even look past the first page simply because of the stupid ass format it's in. Idk why this is a recent trend with online articles but it needs to stop. Unless you are breaking up walls and walls of text with separate pages there is no need what-so-ever to separate it the way that is for a couple of sentences about each player.

Count me in as another who clicked on it, saw 10 pages, then just closed it.

If you want more people to read your piece, you should make it all one page instead of forcing people to click 13 links to read one article.

I wholeheartedly agree. I could see it being warranted if there was a lot of text beneath the pictures but for a simple list like this there's just no reason.

Fair enough, I actually posted that pretty late at night and didn't see the "big roles in their teams part" of the OP. I guess Virtanen is buried under a stacked Canadian team.

Nice list :)

Would have had Oliver Bjorkstrand as an HM.

For me ill be looking forward to seing Ehlers, Virtanen, McDavid, Pastrnak, Eichel, Hanifin, basically most of team USA will be interesting to follow.
