Just echoing what's already been said, but yeah he's been downright dynamic the last chunk of games. He and Mika both have a level of utter confidence and swagger with the puck on their sticks that we haven't seen from any player consistently since I can't remember when.

If anyone thinks that DeAngelo's improved play since the new year is due to being paired with Staal, the evidence against that is starting to pile up. The picture that is emerging is that DeAngelo is carrying Staal and doing significantly better away from him.

Since January 1st in the 20 games where both players dressed Staal and DeAngelo has spent 207:31 5v5 minutes together as a pairing. DeAngelo has played 116:27 away from Staal and Staal has played 119:22 away from DeAngelo.

As a pairing they have gotten heavily defensively geared deployment with a ZSR of 37.86 and been performing roughly in accordance with the team average in most metrics:

That DeAngelo would do better away from Staal, than Staal did away from DeAngelo is harldy shocking considering that Marc plays with Pionk away from DeAngelo. But what is shocking is just how much better DeAngelo does away from Staal than he does with him. While his deployment is more offensively geared it is still significantly defensive at 47.83 ZSR and his metrics are off the charts:

I'm becoming more and more convinced that while Tony is doing an admirable job as a shutdown defenceman, it is a waste of his talents to play him as one.

So you're saying Staal still sucks? Got it. :D

Nuh-uh, Joe Micheletti told me otherwise.

In addition to the metrics posted upthread he now has 12 points in his past 14 games (70 point pace) and 15 in his past 20 (62 point pace). And you've rarely come away from the games thinking he got more points than he deserved.

It's possible that playing with a guy like Staal does help teach rookies a few things that could improve their play, even if it's just playing with more confidence because they feel like they have a steady vet on their side, but at the same time have that vet drag down their measurable stats

yeah it's the "intangibles" argument and I'd never pretend a guy is better than he really is because of "intangibles" but there's a lot of things young players have to learn to be relied upon by their coaches.

There is no denying that it is since being paired with Staal that his play has improved significantly, although the impact is mostly seen away from Staal. Whether it was caused by being paired with Staal or the talking-to's he's gotten from Quinn or something else is another question.

He just looks incredibly confident and comfortable out there

He's becoming the player I thought MDZ was going to turn into eventually. But we all know how that went...

He had a solid game today. 1st period was pretty decent (although I missed the first 6 minutes or so). 2nd period was not good, but not terrible. 3rd period was very good. OT and shootout were great.

MDZ was a funny player...he never was a real good skating defenseman but he had a real good pass and could jump into the play well when he was on his game. I still feel like he kind of got screwed by the Rangers when they kept trying to force him to play his off side because they didn't have room for him on the left and eventually just traded him. But he also probably just overall didn't have the skills to become the players we hoped he could be. Not quite a good enough skater to lug the puck up the ice, didn't have a scary shot, was a good passer but not necessarily the instinctive play maker type. A lot of "does things pretty good but nothing great"

DeAngelo is far more active and skilled than MDZ I think

Yeah, agreed. And this is furthered by the fact that he was never really able to establish himself outside of NY. The reason he had his best seasons with us is because the Rangers were force feeding him PP time even though he was a liability on it. Some of that had to do with us not really having other options. Same thing happened and is currently happening with Pionk, although to a lesser extent now that ADA has taken over. I thought Pionk was going to continue to grow but he hit a hard, immovable brick wall

I thought ADA not dropping the gloves against Niskanen was huge. He looked all the willing to go, but you could practically hear the gears in his head turning, saying Niskanen was not worth the minutes.

And then Quinn putting him in the starting lineup in the shootout spoke volumes. He's really gained Quinn's confidence.
