There may have been something that happened globally that played into that.
Obviously. Just saying the price for cap space shouldn't be much different than it was then since the ceiling is basically the same.

The cap has barely risen since the Marleau trade
Sure, but the other side of the equation has. Teams have adjusted. New contracts have come in very cheaply. Innovating cap-circumvention strategies have emerged.

As I've said, Vegas has proven that cap space is a myth if you're smart enough. Bringing in Hertl/Hanifin and Mantha for about 8 million is simply wild.

All anyone has to do is look back at similar trades and compare the returns to see that Grier came nowhere close to gaining historical value back in return for Hertl, and this has become a trend with him.

Meier was a wash at best. Every other transaction involving Grier has been nothing short of a God damned embarrassment.

Oh I'm sorry. I wasn't aware you were only dispensing in unassailable facts instead of your opinion. That changes everything. My apologies for not bowing to your obvious objective greatness and ceding the floor to your proclamations.

...wait, that's ridiculous.

You can have whatever opinion you want of the trade but it is not for you to sit in judgement of other fans and speak of them as lesser for not sharing your viewpoint. If you don't like the idea that other people think differently than you or believe that everyone else are not real fans in your estimation for not sharing your sentiments, then there's the door. Take it and go find another corner of the internet to crow in. I hear X or whatever it's called loves this sort of stuff. But if you're going to stay here you're going to keep your petty, snide comments to yourself and accept that people are allowed to disagree with you without being condescended to, mocked, or otherwise belittled. Them's the rules you signed up for.

I do find it funny that some are so worried about removing Hertl's cap off the books when we still need to spend about 15-18 million next year just to reach the floor.

His contract was atrocious. Hertl's contract will be taught in classes for interim GM malpractice.

It's almost like there are another five years left on that abomination of a contract after next year.

Wow, this thread has been a roller coaster.

Let me start by saying: I love Tomas. I'm super sad to see him go, and f*** Vegas.

But as someone who is in it for the long haul and thinks we shouldn't have signed him to begin with, and who knows that it won't be 2030 before I think this team really has a chance to compete, I believe that this is a move that was needed. This is finally the "strip it to the studs" housecleaning that should have been started long ago.

This is the Athletic analysis:
"The Sharks get out from under a contract that maybe shouldn’t have been signed in the first place, because it conflicted with what the long-term vision should have been. But they make out well with David Edstrom (the Golden Knights’ top prospect) and a 2025 first-rounder, which should help this team push its rebuild along. This is the caliber of trade the Sharks have really needed in this process. Being without now two of their retention slots until 2027 hurts a rebuilding team’s ability to leverage their cap, but it would have been impossible to trade Hertl without that."

The main boards thread is such a disaster that it's hard to see what smart people think about the return, but on balance this seems like a market rate trade that gives us a solid prospect and another top 32 pick next year to keep building out the team.

Bit of a kick to the nuts/oves to be reminded just how long and painful this rebuild is going to be, but I'm guessing that 12 months from now we'll be decently excited about the drat pick this 1st rounder might get us. And Edstrom has has a pretty decent D+1 year.

I agree with a lot of this. Genuinely I think if this deal was with like Carolina or even Colorado I’d be more okay with it.

Rather get a little bit of joy watching him play for us for four years than pretend to have to root for the Mike Hoffman's of the world for that time.
You know it's possible for the Sharks to get likeable young players that are actually still good at hockey right? Will Smith definitely seems like an extremely likeable person.

Really enjoyed this, good write up. I liked what you had to say about Edstrom on Twitter, can you elaborate more on what you think he can be, ceiling/floor-wise?

While well written and true, Grier has really put the team in a predicament where if none of these picks work out it could have dire consequence for the organization. He's sacrificed the human element of fandomship for the proper business decisions for the organization, but it's also going to make most casual fans a little more impatient for positive signs.
