Well, looks like AV is going to Philly

Awful news. For a team that has worked hard the last few years to fill the farm with young talent, they hire a coach who rides his veterans and doesn't want any part of development of youth. This has Homer's fingerprints all over it. Guy was horrid as a GM, put the team back years and gets fired and rewarded with a promotion. Didn't like the Fletcher hiring because he thinks too much like HOmer. Fletcher said they (he and AV) feel the team is in a position to win sooner than later. Translation , some of that talent that Hexy worked so hard to get, and develop will be traded for that 'guy', the 'difference maker' . And AV's system is offensive heavy, with way too much of the opposition spending time in the other end, creating high shooting % , great for Carter Hart and a shaky D. They needed a coach with a more defensive structure. I'm so pissed. THree years from now, he'll get fired and we go thru this all over again. The Flyers are a tough division and with Q in FLA, the conference got tougher. They won't make the EC finals, I don't see them making the playoffs. And Fletcher thinks they can win 'sooner'.

C’mon Blake wait a bit and give Lane Lambert an interview.

I mean, you have waited this long, what’s another month (depending how far the Isles go).

Can we please forget about McLellan and sign Jon Cooper one day after he will get fired? Thanks

Do you know anything about vigneault ? His canuck and ranger teams were 2 of the best defensive teams in the league. Youre talking out of your ass

Good goaltending and emphasis on shot blocking defense helps.

Do you have any information to prove that AV is a bad defensive coach that was only bailed out by good goaltending? Over the course of his tenure as the Canucks head coach, his team was 5th in goals allowed. Over his tenure in New York he was 11th overall in goals allowed and if you take out the year that the team was purposefully tanking he moves up to 7th. I have a hard time believing that was all due to goaltending. As for your other point, isn't placing an emphasis on shot blocking something that a coach does? Not sure how a coach putting a system in place to make the team better defensively can be a knock on said coach...

Remember how much Rangers fans hyped up their defense and said they were comparable to the Kings during the 2014 Stanley Cup Final?

Most Rags fans who grew tired of Vigneault bemoaned the defensive shell he had them playing in.

I didn't say he was a bad defensive coach. I said he benefited from having good goaltenders and employed a defensive system/shell which emphasizes blocking shots.

Players blocking shots in some circumstances is okay. But it's really not a good idea as a rule because:
A) you want the goalie to see the shot as much as possible
B) the skater's gear isn't supposed to do the majotity of blocking

I prefer coaches who push pace and tempo, instead of playing a more reactive way. It doesn't make him a bad coach. Just not the one I want coaching my team.

When the Kings were at their defensive peak, they were always last or second to last in blocked shots each season. Also near the bottom in takeaways. That was straight up on the puck defensive positioning and snuffing players out with the puck (near the top of league in hits). I remember that the Rangers in 2014 were a team heavily dependent on blocking shots and their fans saw it as some sort of badge of honor. Whereas I viewed it (as well as others) as a sub-optimal defensive philosophy. I like players willing to block shots, but not as a backbone to playing defense.

AV had the bad timing of playing anti-corsi hockey in the corsi era, with an emphasis on collapsing, blocking, and counterpunching. Not really unlike Terry Murray hockey in a way.

I am so confused by what you are arguing right now. The initial argument was calling him a poor defensive coach and someone responded by pointing out that his teams were top tier defensively. You said the only reason his teams were so good at limiting goals against was because he had good goaltenders and emphasized shot blocking in his systems. I pointed out that a teams system relates to a coaches strategy. Now you are saying that emphasizing shot blocking is not a good idea because of equipment durability?
