Todd McLellan and the Reverse Sweep Narrative

this board loves to point to the reverse sweep specifically as an item of McLellan's failures.
Because it's the biggest and most obvious example. When someone's a bumbling f***up it's not really necessary to enumerate every single failure every time you talk about it. The highlights are sufficient.

Given our performances in overtime do you seriously think it’s not fair to criticise him for not trying QB or Vilardi at some point? We’ve been poor and predictably so whilst 3-3. I don’t believe you don’t see it and have to assume you’re trying to provoke a response… & I just fell into your trap
I know stats and reality don't mean much around here because were all very emotional...but the Kings are in the top 10 for OT wins. So NO, I don't put too much thought or concern into it.

I said in another post that it’s certainly not all on TMac. However the injury you described is when a coach earns his stripes. He adapts and tweaks things to do whatever it takes to win. Whilst believing the difference in leadership in the respective dressing rooms played a huge part you cannot completely absolve the coach any more than you can solely blame him.

Sutter would have told player X to go block a puck with his face to win a game and the player (that year at least) would have done it. I don’t think TMac makes that request or the SJ player would do it, certainly not that year. It’s an analogy before anyone takes me too literally… although that might actually be the year Greene took a puck to the head LOL.

TMac needs to show he can make strategic and tactical changes to win games In the post season. Trusting the system is fine in the regular season, but you have to be adaptable to win in the play-offs. I’m not saying he can’t btw, because the signing of Jim Hiller is him adapting by loosening the strings on the pp. so I hold out some hope. Yes, I have concerns but the genius move of moving QB to LW1 means I retain some trust.

I will add that after the debacle in Buffalo it really looked like he was starting to lose the room, even @GoldenBearHockey said something to that effect. However he turned it around and that rarely happens. That says a lot and now the buy in is definitely there.

This though will be the play offs he is judged by in LA and rightly so, but I’ll actually wait until after they complete.

I did, the way they looked in that period, extremely disinterested, no drive, no purpose......but he's turned that around clearly

When I think of the reverse sweep, I think it had much more to do with the Kings coming out flat than anything the Sharks did. Not only were the Kings not playing with any energy, the bounces were going against them.

I remember TMac's press conference after that series and when asked about it he said that it wasn't just the last few games, the Kings had been outplaying them by a good margin from game 3 on. Once they settled in they couldn't get anything started.

Say what you will, but when a team gets reversed swept like that culminating with a humiliating defeat on home ice, everyone is to blame including the mascot and parking attendants.
I am agreeing with Eagle Fang for 2 reasons

1) His post is correct according to my very limited brain power
2) but more importantly Eagle Fang is a badass name

The coach of the year is voted on before the end of the playoffs.

But he absolutely should be in contention either way. I think he should have won it last year. AmazIng coaching job with all the injuries on D.
Yeah Herby, I am talking about winning the conference in the regular season. I think the odds of the Kings getting to the Cup Finals this year are astronomical given their inexperience at so many key positions. Possible of course, just extremely unlikely.

If the Kings win the Conference MacLellan deserves the Adams. If they come close I don't think he will get the votes.

Look at what he did last year that consisted of not having his #1 dman for half the year, and he didn't even get a nod to be considered for the Jack Adams.

Last year the Kings were an overachiever who snuck up on the league. This year they took a big step forward. I don't know that he will get the recognition without an "achievement" be it having the best record in the Conference for the first time ever, or almost as uniquely winning their division. Milestones get more attention than just making the playoffs.

We can’t ignore the fact that the majority of the awards go to Eastern teams anyway.

lol -- you might want to dig a little deeper into the OT results for the Kings. I hope you realize that when teams are tied, there is the OT. If still tied, there is the SO. You might feel different upon seeing what the Kings record is during the 5 minute OT (as opposed to the SO thereafter).

Nah, I don't feel different...two points is two points.

One thing i dont think is said enough is that todd never uses the time out. We could get screwed by this at some point. And although i think todd is a permanent member of the old boys club running the kings, i never thought he is incompetent. Just think if we stayed with willie dejardins.
Overall i think coaches at this level have much less to do with a teams success than we think they do. To me todd appears to be be your run of the mill egomaniac hardhead that appears to be the archetype of pro head coaches across all the sports.

In OT, they have won 4 times and lost 7 times in OT. Tha's 4-7 -- as a percentage, that's 36.36%. For non-math folks, that's not good...at all. That's 7 lost points. Even just being slightly below 500 (5-6) would give them two additional points ("two points is two points"). That's still a very bad percentage though.

Hmm, maybe something isn't working in the 5 minute OT. Maybe a change could be made and we could secure a few more points and be .500 at least. Or maybe not -- just keep doing the same thing and hope for different results.

Calgary Edmonton and Colorado took a big step back more than LA took a big step forward.
All three of those teams were ahead of us last season but this year they have all encountered setbacks that have rendered them less successful thus far in the regular season.
On the bright side, LA has only become a complete team since the trade deadline so there is some room for growth. The results thus far are quite satisfactory.

I feel like Colorado is hard to quantify due to how injured they've been all year, but if they get Landeskog back and everyone else is healthy they're still scary. And Ekholm was a great pick up by Edmonton, goaltending is still their biggest issue but McDavid can very easily win a series on his own, Kings are a more complete team but McDavid is the X-factor, I don't wanna face them although it's looking like they will be the Kings matchup.

He did, actually. TMac was tied with Bednar for 5th in Adams voting. I think he actually ended up in 6th because Bednar got one more first place vote? Not sure how it works.

Was pre-2012 playoff run Sutter doubted the same way as Todd is now? Sutter didn’t exactly have successful playoff runs outside of that seemingly fluky 2004 run.

The Dean's pals and farmer jokes were rampant, especially after his first press conference after a game. As always, the 'ol boys club was discussed and this guy is either drunk or incoherent.

Once we started steamrolling people down the stretch people started to believe in him, myself included. I wasn't against the move at the time, but not really for it either. All I knew was his PC's were hilarious with trolling and farm references.

How has Edmonton taken a big step back? Their record is on pace to be almost the same as it was last year. I think that team is honestly better this year and will finish with a better record than last year.

You could just as easily argue that teams like Vegas, Seattle, and Dallas have taken big steps forward this year.

Colorado seems to be returning to form after the SC hangover.

His teams generally didn't have the expectations that T-Mac's SJ teams had although he did have a couple of high regular season finishes married to first round exits. He stepped in to that '04 team though and took them within inches of winning a Cup and then they took 1st in the division the following year only to get bounced in Round 1 by Anaheim who would go on to the WCF that season and then win the Cup the following year.

His failure as GM of Calgary was more of the criticism at the time...that and the Kings problem was scoring and he wasn't necessarily viewed as an offensive minded coach.

Sutter's rep wasn't as a choker, it was that he was demanding with a short shelf life. Nothing has changed.

Yeah I should be clear because Im on him a lot. I don't think he's totally incompetent. As always, brilliant systems and setup coach. Below average to terrible in-game general. Re: the time outs and other decisions--I want to believe it's not because he forgets/is dumb and is because he's incredibly stubborn. Sort of like how Blake's patience/conservative nature can work but can also be a detriment, I'm just totally inferring here, but I suspect McLellan sticks to his guns out of a patience/perseverance value and would rather go down with the ship than adapt. That's the nicest way I can say it.
