They most certainly are when they are RFAs. Arizona holds his rights.

They hold his NHL rights but he's not employed by them. He could sign with a team in any other league. Point is, he's not holding out on his employer, because he isn't employed by the Coyotes. They own his NHL rights. That's all.

Didn't Reider ask for a trade from the Oilers? This guy is a great player but damn if he doesn't want to call all the shots.

He didn't ask for a trade, from the sounds of it we just couldn't come to terms on salary from what I recall reading he wanted high 2nd round pick money on his ELC and we were offering him an ELC closer to an early 3rd round pick. There were also concerns at the time on how he'd break into our line-up being a small skilled player when we had tons of them at the time.

I thought that he basically said he wouldn't sign because he didn't see a spot for him to have a legitimate chance to make the roster due to all the smaller skilled guys on the team. Maybe I'm wrong, it happened a while back.

His ask has always been too high. He won't be missed if he wants to sit out. Go play in the KHL.

He's just not that good to be demanding this type of attention...

Dime a dozen tweener

Did he really say that? Reider seems to have Tippet's favour. I see him on the second line and Vrbata bumped off if anyone.

This is the leverage a free agent has and is free to use. I see little reason to get upset at players that use the leverage they have in order to get themselves what they feel is the best deal. It doesn't always work but it's the choice the player has every right to make.

And no contract does mean not showing up to camp. Why? The risk of injury. So unless you are planning on bringing your own insurance it doesn't make sense.

The rumor is he wanted out of Edmonton because he didn't see a path through that winger depth. Funny in retrospect. With the Coyotes it's a money thing. And not much. Like 500kay/yr.

Interesting - I didn't know that. All I heard at the time was that it was the Oilers who didn't see a path for another small forward, and wanted Kessy's size.

If the Coyotes can't get a deal done I'm sure Ottawa would be interested. Makes a lot of sense with MacArthur's injury and they'd probably pay him what he wants.

I don't know why people are so suddenly concerned with unsigned RFA's (and their plan to not attend camp). Every season there are unsigned RFA's that generally get deals, but every year they sit out of their training camp until they have a contract in place. It's standard procedure - not some sign of a player revolt and an impending lockout

It's not even that unusual when you factor in the WCH that is still currently going on. I'd imagine we're going to start seeing a few contracts get inked in this coming week with players returning home.

There were rumors at the time about him asking for higher salary because he wanted to go to a team with less skilled forward depth. The irony being that we could actually use him on our 2nd line now.

I think "wanting Kessy's size" was an attempt to cover from the true story. It's better to claim "we need size" then to say "oh, Reider didn't want to sign with us so we had to trade him".
