To sign or not to re-sign that is the question with Freddy Andersen.?

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
What is the alternative we go with Campbell and Hutchinson?

Until we have a better option, isn't what we currently have still our best option?

Agreed, Campbell is currently our best option.

Would be neat if we could swap our backup Freddy for an upgrade tho.

Andersen is not coming back. If he continues his play from last season and this season so far then the Leafs will flame out early again and have no interest in bringing him back. If a miracle happens and he turns it around and leads us to a cup we won't be able to afford him.

I wouldn't even have him finish the season, If Dubas offers him a contract i'll be stunned. IMO there is a basically a 0% chance this team can win a cup with him in net.

He's seems so emotionless and completely disconnected from the flow of the game, but unlike someone with ice in their veins he undeniably shrinks under the spotlight and plays well below his capabilities in big moments.

I honestly think the reason he doesn't ever get pulled or even the slightest criticism is because the coaches know he can't take it and it will mess with his head.

I know you hate Freddy but calling him the backup is a bit much. I'm pretty sure the numbers will show that there aren't 30 goalies better than Freddie who have played a significant number of games this season. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

You hate Freddie but think Dubas walks on water - do you see the contradiction here?

Hint - Dubas has been here long enough to take responsibility for the roster, and that includes the most important position on the team.

Goalies are voodoo, reading anything into their demeanour would be a mistake.

He can sit too. I’m good with that. Let him see he’s done nothing for us in 18 months

100% my thoughts exactly.

I don't have any emotions towards Freddy.

It's just a fact that he's not very good.

Of the 42 goalies that have faced at least 1500 shot attempts this year and last year, Fred ranks 29th in sv% and 30th in dfsv%.

Of the top-31 biggest minute goalies over this year and last, he is 22nd in sv% and 23rd in dfsv%.

He's a weakness on our roster, not a strength.

Been saying this for upwards of 2 years now.

Who is there to realistically target as a replacement this season? We're not going to have an easier path to the ECF than this year so it's critical we give him the boot now and not wait for him to choke away this opportunity.

I've heard Kuemper from ARZ but doesn't he have injury problems too?

Edit:come to think of it Coyotes probably wouldn't trade him. They're right there in playoff race in their division

In regular season games where defenders keep everything to outside and he plays his normal butterfly Elkin program and concentrates and nothing comes at him at speed where he needs to be athletic/ use reflexes he is fine ... but in playoffs he has same athletic issues plus you get da softies on that of that

You know what they say " A bird in the hand is better than 2 backup birds in the bush".

Until we have a better option, he is still the best option we have is my position.. I'd like to see us upgrade as Freddy A might be the teams weakest link standing in the way of ultimate success.

Who is available in trade, and what is the cost to upgrade?

I though that too. I don’t think so now. He can play backup somewhere else. He’s been a backup for 18 months now. I see the decline in play on a large enough sample size. He’s definitely not worth re-signing. We need a #1 goalie again. He’s a insurance policy at best. :) I’m done with him. I hope they move him. If not fine, good riddance in the off season and if he’s what we are banking on it will be a long one.

I agree in principle. If he's the best option then why would you make things worse? Although I have some hope that Campbell can help.

The issue I have is that would be my position in a vacuum, without considering contracts. I am extremely hesitant to make any kind of long-term and large dollar commitment to Andersen. I don't know what the market will be for him. I think there will be at least a few teams that would see him as an upgrade for their situation.

It will be very interesting to see how Dubas handles this. It will be one of the toughest decisions he's had to make so far, in terms of whether to keep Andersen and if not, who takes over.

Could we pry one of MAF or Lehner from VGK?

That is a situation I would be looking into personally

There's no way you sign him after these past 2 years. If he requested a 1 year deal I think I'd do it though

At the time, I loved the acquisition of Andersen. And for the transition period, and the price paid, it really worked out. But the last few playoffs and this season is showing he is and what will continue to hold this team back from separating itself from being a really good team and a great contender. His numbers only look decent/passable because he is subpar goalie on a quality team.
