I remember seeing some of the fancy stats from the playoff run... sandin started to get exploited according to the advanced stats and liljegren turned into a possession monster

I believe that liljegren should start the season with the Leafs... when you're pushing 70+% cf% in a lot of playoff games, it's probably best to keep the challenge coming and work the minor details in the NHL.

Bruh, you should watch a bunch of games with liljegren/prospect playing before you say he/they are NHL ready. He played well in the playoffs and finished up a -2 with Borgman/Loverde +5/6... I don't have any playoff cf% available

There are people around here who claim Bracco is a penalty killer on the Marlies ...

where did i say i didn't?

liljegren is already a better defender now than rielly is.

Did Liljegren even play in the preseason last year? I swear I remember a game where he played with Sandin and they looked really dominant but I just got finished watching highlights from most of the preseason and never saw him once...wtf. What am I missing?

they played and were probably our best dpair in camp.

Yea finally found him in the game against Buffalo on the 21st. He was #37.

Liljegren and Sandin both played (and played together) on the 19th (against Ottawa) and the 21st (against Buffalo). Sandin played a third game (against Montreal on the 24th).

In all two (lilly) or three (sandin) games they were almost entirely out on the ice against AHL (or lower) quality opponents, although their teammates were not great either.

Anybody still think he could be top pairing for us?

Maybe in his mid 20's if he continues a positive development path. This year will really show us a lot about where his potential lies IMO since he'll probably have the most defensive responsibility on the team and will also be looking to up his offensive numbers. Hopefully he's getting past the initial growing pains and he's shown us he's capable of another level, just has to maintain it.

Nobody quoting Dubas with Bobby Mac, wherein he completely hedged his bets that either of the two kids would make it out of camp? Look for the Dermott model with Lil, unless he blows the doors off at camp. Here's hoping he does.

Ummm, what?

I think he's saying that because Rielly graded out as one of the bottom-5 defenseman in regards to actual "defense" last season by the most reliable defensive metric.

On the bright side, it's his first legit "awful" season defensively, but on the not bright side, it was his first "legit" ridiculously good offensive season making it mean it might be closer to the norm than most of us would prefer. There's always a chance he could bounce back to just below average defensively, but last season he was essentially what people used to think Karlsson was: fantastic offense, awful defense (which was and always will be incorrect when it comes to EK).

That Rielly back and forth was with me and I noticed a couple more of his posts from that exchange were removed, dunno why? The guy legit believes Lily is a better defensive d'man than Rielly is right now as a player... He doesn't realize Rielly plays against the other teams #1, #2 "NHL" lines every game

If you think Liljegren is a better defender than Rielly, you're in for a rude awakening.

And this is coming from a guy that's pretty high on Liljegren.

If Rielly is as bad as he was last season defensively, there's no doubt in my mind Liljegren is better (defensively) today, no matter what competition you're thinking of throwing him into. The only guys that graded worse in the best defensive metric we have (that played more than 500 minutes)? Robert Hagg and Ben Hutton.

Do I think that's the norm? Hell no. He'll have peaks and valleys, and it was far worse than he's ever been in his entire career. I just don't think it's really that crazy to believe a guy who is an absolute stud in the AHL could reasonably be better (or similar) defensively than the 3rd worst defenseman last season.

But on the bright side, Rielly is still awesome. Guy is easily a top-5 offensive defenseman, and overall grades out as a huge positive still even with his defensive shortcomings.

Gents lets not put down our own. Take the high road people. Lily played some excellent defense in the 3rd round against the Checkers which is damn close to an NHL team in terms of speed. I am not as high on Lily myself but give the kid credit he showed up big when it counted. He needs to be given a chance to make the team this camp. Personally I'd like to see him get another year under his belt with Marlies where he gets some PP time on unit #1. and I know he did at start of last year and I know Keefe said it did not work out as planned but irrespective of all that it is a minor league team meant to develop players for the Leafs. Who cares if they end up in 1st or not. I would like to see an equal PP time system developed so both Sandin and Lily develop. I thought Sandin was ready until I saw the 3rd round and I feel now he needs to work on his speed. He toyed with other teams in 1st and 2nd round but his passes were routinely intercepted by the Checkers and you could tell his speed was holding him back. He is not ready for the NHL either. Give the kids a break and let them become pros and give them both a chance to be guys in our top 4.

72 points, +24, dragged around the corps known as Ron Hainsey all season, in the discussion for the Norris Trophy.
UMMMMM, no, a 3rd pairing AHL D is not better defensively.

Rielly looked fine to me defensively, dunno what you saw ...

Rielly has gotten better as he has gained more experience in his own end. It takes time at NHL level to develop a defenseman. But he will never be a guy who breaks up the cycle, spears a guy in the nuts in front of the net, lays down to take one off the cheek bone and reefs a guys going hard to net. He is never going to be a true defensive defenseman who does whatever it takes to stop chances and makes people pay for going to the net.

Nor do I want him to be. Dmen that play like that get injured all the time. Lidstorm never played that style and was rock solid defensively, great offensively too and rarely missed a game. That's who he should model his game after.
