Boy that's a dirty play to me. You just can't have it, sending guy in to the boards like that. Gave him the ol'Brian McCabe Can Opener, it's a hard compete move sure, but going in to the boards like that.. I mean the result speaks for itself.

I don't know what comes of it.

Apparently the ref claims he didn't see it so that means the DoPS can step in and assess supplemental discipline. Does anyone believe that will happen though?
Does it matter? DoPS hands down absolute joke punishments. Marchand has an impressive collection of those jokes, yet he still does Marchand things. The Leafs need to stop expecting DoPS, the refs, or anyone else to swoop in and save them from the other 31 teams who know exactly what buttons to push to beat them. The answer will only ever be found in that locker room. Why they haven't been able to find it for years is the question.

Team of soft p***yes
Alas.
Opposing teams know for a fact that the Leafs will have very little to no pushback when they step out of line. And that´s just infuriating.
Long term injury or not, fines/suspension or not, The Rat Marchand should have been kissing the ice with a bloodied nose after that dirty play.

Can´t wait to see the DPOS dishing out another fine and (at most) a game suspension for the Rat.
The dirtiest player in the show is allowed to pull the same BS several times a year, year in year out.

I was told adding a goon to the 4th line who can play 5 minutes a night would make us a tough intimidating team - what gives?!?!!?

If you want the team to be tough, you need guys sprinkled throughout the lineup, particularly in the top 4 on D and top 6-9 up front.

It was a little dirty, but it is the NHL, and there are built in mechanism to deal with it….they didn’t

That play happened so fast. I don't know if it was intentional or an accident.

What I do know is Liljegren has to brace himself. Either play the puck or take the hit. You cannot do both every time. Sometimes you're going to lose the race. Unfortunately you are going to have to take the impact (sorry folks it's a contact sport). I hope he's ok, but Liljegren's ability is really shining this early in the season. He's not great. He's a bit slow, he gets pushed around, and he is in no way developing into a top 4 D.

Very unfortunate. Also I feel like this was the 3rd or 4th straight game where Lilly got roughed up/smoked at some point.

When the rat gets his comeuppance, it will be a glorious day.

honestly if it was someone else I probably wouldn't assume intent but with his record the stick goes between the leg and pushes his skate out right before they get to the boards

It’s a borderline play. If it’s a Leaf player initiating or someone not named Marchand, than it’s probably not as scrutinized.

Either way, there should have been an answer. But I guess when you pay a group of young punks big money, they couldn’t care less what happens to their teammate.

The days of Wendel Clark chasing around a rat like Denis Savard and pummeling him are over.

Marchand wanted to win the puck battle, they were battling for position, unfortunately they tangledup and Liljegren got hurt. The NHL allows retribution, Leafs said it’s OK, all is fine.

Marchand‘s other option was to treat it like he was down goal in dying minutes of a game 7 and gave him a snow shower.……

Looked really bad. Still can’t believe NO ONE stood up for Liljegren. Such a dirty play by the rat.
This is why a guy like Reaves makes no sense on the roster, he would never be on the ice defending a player like Marchand to begin with.

If you're going to deter that type of behaviour you need a guy who can actually play in your top 6 or top 4D.

What would be great is if our core wasn't so devoid of these elements.

If you rank our core on things like stickhandling, skating, offensive creativity, shooting ability, they'd rank at the very top in the league.

If you rank our core on things like intensity, physicality, sacrifice, willingness to do whatever it takes to win they'd rank at the very bottom in the league.

Maybe some of the eye test people go too far with overvaluing those things but to pretend like they aren't extremely real things is just as bad of an oversight.

Seeing it in slow motion makes me question more of what Liljegren is doing as opposed to whether something dirty occured.

Look at his skates. He's not going sideways to break. He's still at the same pace with his skates aimed for the puck near the boards. This is hockey 101 folks. Your coach never teaches you to never break and to always aim your skates towards the boards.

I don't want to say that Liljegren deserves to be injured, but damn. He has to be play safe. Let Marchand have it if means you're going to be side-lined for a while.

EXTREMELY dirty play by Marchand - a clearly intentional can opener + slewfoot while Lily was heading full speed towards the boards. Should 100% be a multi-game suspension.

Hope “will miss significant time” is weeks, not months, for Lily. It looked pretty bad. Team response was definitely trash, Reaves needed to force Marchand to fight, but there was nothing.

Exactly. With the stickhandling, skating etc. you can do well enough in the regular season but when you're at the bottom at the league in either category, you're not going to go far in the playoffs. It would take a miracle for this team to win the cup.

Completely agree. Last nights game just proved to everyone Reaves is completely pointless/useless.
