They understand how to play the game, they understand x's and o's and strategy but thats about it.

Just to add, I listen to them every day because I find them entertaining.
Ya maybe this was a better way to put it. I think they do a good job giving praise when the team deserves it, and are relatively fair in their criticism's when the team comes up short.

I much rather listen to former players give their criticisms than media. It's easy to throw stones at these guys when we know nothing about playing in the NHL, and in a Canadian market. Even though Hayes never played in the show, he understands a players mindset having played competitive puck.

They are wrong on their assessments from time to time, just like everyone. Including myself. But overall I think they give good insight and they are entertaining as hell IMO

Sandin is smart. His hits aren't bone crunching but they are effective. He knows his weakness is his speed so if he can bump a guy off stride he has time to get positioned properly. At least that's how I see it.
that's a useful skill to have, I hope it rubs off on Liljegren

I mean that's not really being sheltered. Sheltered would be like lowest d zone starts, and highest ozone starts with the majority of all starts in the ozone. Like 3rd lowest in the dzone just tells me that's 2nd pairing usage.

fair take! Mind you I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be sheltered or put in favourable situations right? It shouldn’t be taken as a negative. Or I hope people arent taking me saying it as a slight. I think it’s beneficial to put your prospects in a position where they have a higher probability to succeed. Ofc you need to test them here and there too.

They are the best radio show in Toronto hands down. Their bits are funny

I won’t cause I’m not a dick. But I’m all about keeping it real. I was wrong in my take a few days ago, I can admit that. But I also think context and accuracy is important in discussion. I think him being sheltered is good. He’s playing with confidence and poise. Like I mentioned before. The leafs are not the greatest in the defensive zone. So starting him there would kill his confidence.

I know you aren't a dick. I was just doing a little teasing. Sorry about that. He'll get you over to the good side of the force soon.

I usually have 1050 on as I work most of the day, but I only really listen to Leafs oriented content as I don't really follow any other Toronto sports team religiously being from Vancouver. I think they're hilarious. O is your typical grumpy ex-NHL guy who calls it as he see's it. I love it. He is clearly a fan of this team, which isn't always the case for former players. Far too often former players act like they are too big time to be fans past their playing days. His takes can be irrational at times, but no where close to this board after a loss lol. Noodles is sneaky funny and gives solid takes. and Hayes just drives the bus.

They are far more entertaining IMO than Leafs lunch.

O Dog and Hayes literally know nothing about hockey. Noodles is slightly better, but his opinions are bad for wildly different reasons.

They are entertaining as a group, but I bet the average HF poster knows more about hockey than these 3 guys.

Not too long ago O Dog literally said (paraphrased):

"I look at a team like Philly who added Ellis and that swedish guy (was referring to Risto ) and I dont see how the Leafs can make those kind of improvements mid-season. "

As if Philly didnt add those guys in the offseason and are also currently capped out...
It was a bit refreshing seeing Siegel there yesterday who actually knows other sports. Hayes does too and to an extent Jeff. Noodles is clueless on anything but hockey.

The Sandin-Liljegren pairing looked amazing to me last night, they compliment each other really well stylistically and seem to do a great job making one another available for a pass while we're breaking out of the zone, love it.
Lilly looks so much better than in his previous stints, still early into his season but how can you not be excited with his play so far

Bourne was on the Fan Morning show and was asked about the Sandin-Liljegren pairing, and said something like "I feel bad for Sandin. He's like I'm my own player. Stop lumping me in with this guy". That seemed like a shot at Liljegren. That stuff is getting annoying.

He's looked pretty good with Sandin. I'm surprised that pair isn't putting up more points though.
Just a matter of time. The seem to be in the offensive zone a lot. As long as they keep playing the way they are, we will be in very good shape for years and years. The Points will inevitably come.

We are looking at the inception of our future top pairing IMO

He also did say later that Liljegren does look like an NHL player and he was wrong as just 2 weeks ago he didn’t think that.

He looks good, though I thought he was a better skater.

He's always been such a weird skater.

His 4-way directional skating is great, his backwards skating, great, his edge work is good as well. But his pitch fork and flailing back strides style skating from a stand still has and will continue to be an issue for him.

From a stand still he can get beat, I think we saw it a few times last night, especially with quicker forwards like Point. But the other aspects of his skating is above average. Just an overall weird skater.

He may not be a burner, but he knows his limitations. His gaps are exceptional. He knows people can burn him wide, but he is more than willing to allow them to do that because he gaps up quick and angles them directly into the corners. Hardly ever will you see him completely get turned around by someone beating him wide. Perfect example, last night. On this play there was neutral zone turnover which caught Timmy out of position. Killorn receives the puck in a very good position.

Killorn being a Left handed shooter would be harder for him to protect the puck if he drove to the net. Timmy takes the angle to the net which is to be expected. Where Timmy separates himself on this play is how quickly he gaps up after being in a very tough position. He knows he wont catch him, but he takes the exact amount of strides necessary to have his stick be in a lane to disrupt the play towards the net, and effectively angles Killorn into the corner after Timmy's stick took away the play towards the net.

this is just one play that I can find on twitter, but he does shit like this 4-5 times a game it seems

Yeah I think this was mentioned in an article some time ago. He has a wierd thing where he will purposefully give the opposing player room, and then quickly take it away and push him to the boards.

I think if you had been watching Lilly on the marlies you saw all this coming. For him when he came up to the NHL it was all between the ears, and a few years ago we saw the same thing on the marlies. He overcame that and he will overcome the NHL too, once he has his confidence he was always going to be a top 4 guy.

Thats why the takes that he was busting by this age were so absurd, you were essentially saying "I haven't watched a marlies game" which I think a good chunk of sports media and his detractors here could say.
