My friend asked me to hypnotize her.
I worked at a summer camp 20+ years ago, and Saturday nights they had some guy come around and hypnotize the audience of kids and had them playing violins, skydiving, becoming chickens, etc. I'm sure you've seen the schtick at a renaissance faire or somewhere.

Anywho, after 6 weeks, I memorized the guys lines verbatim, so I gave it a shot and hypnotized one of the more suggestive kids who had a blast on the stage with the guy the week before and it worked, so I started doing kids and counselors until of course the administration caught wind of it and said knock it off.

I told my friend this story once, and now she's all geeked to give it a shot. So, tomorrow we're giving it a whirl. Wish me luck.

This is kinda a confession, because hypnotizing folks as a 20 year old seems like a lark, but now as a real adult it seems batshit crazy.

I used to own a bar a few blocks from BAM and had some late night stage hand regulars. Mostly nice guys but holy shit would they go hard and bitch about their jobs incessantly.

Looking at this rock lineup I think I might get it, and they were just working theater and the occasional amphitheater shows:

Feb 18: Farro
Feb 19: Seton Hall
Feb 20: Jo Koy
Feb 21: Globetrotters
Feb 22: Billie Eilish
Feb 23: Seton Hall
Feb 24: Devils
Feb 25: Elton John
Feb 26: Tool
Feb 27: Journey
Feb 28: Devils

Now that I think about it, I'd probably go to jail.

And I actually like half that shit.

They still have the option to order online and have it delivered, which forces them to stay at home in that instance

Just catching up on the TAN…. How did your experiment go?

She claims I succeeded in getting her under. Could be - she was all twitchy and when I tried to make her laugh she didn't. I spent time the night before preparing a pretty solid script. Her partner is a trained hypnotist, and she confided in me afterwards that she has herself hypnotized like 20 people as part of therapy she runs.

She has been having terrible nightmares nightly all of her life that impact her sleep. So far in two days, she's had nothing but good dreams so she thinks that it may have worked.

I still think the whole scenario is pretty wild and I'm dubious I actually did anything, but if I helped her, well then, that is pretty cool - and she's not the type to troll me and I don't know what she'd get out of doing this if she wasn't serious.

I didn't video tape it, nor did I make her play the violin or become Mary Queen of Scots or dance like a chicken. (regrets)

Time to quit my day job, I guess?

Either it legit worked or it was a mental thing with her (it still worked). So kudos to you. There was a local high school teacher in the town I live in now that was hypnotizing his students in class for years. Well he was until a few of his students committed suicide after class one day. Those kids and others all claimed to feel very strange after going under and being hypnotized. He doesn’t teach anymore.

Omg that's crazy. I'm kinda amazed that hypnotizing is a thing. Seems so weird that we got designed with a software backdoor exploit. I've never been hypnotized myself, but that guy I watched would get 20 onstage at a time and probably succeeded with 15 of them. People all thought it was really cool afterwards and didn't remember anything he did until the very end of the show when he'd say 'remember'. Ive always wondered if a kid I hypnotized for fun at camp would come back and say 'you ruined my life' or something. Kinda led to my reluctance in trying it this time.

A big factor in whether hypnosis will be successful is whether the subject believes in hypnosis as a concept. So if someone tells you that they don't think you can hypnotize them, they're probably right. They need to be in the right mindset to be open to suggestion.

that’s not what years of bad movies and tv have taught me

I've recently learned that you can order ketamine to your home in Oregon if you have a prescription.

They're also the only state in the union with legally assisted suicide.

I have to be honest, I'm intrigued to see how this plays out long term.

The suicide thing seems to have been working out well, as dark as that may seem.

I tend to think I can't be hypnotized.

But would never put myself in a position to be hypnotized. The idea of someone controlling me via mind control? Strong pass.

True mind control is unlikely, but we are all influenced by our environments in ways both conscious and unconscious.

The advance of technology may also make it easier to influence others' thinking. Some companies (like Neuralink or Kernel) are trying to create computer-brain interfaces that could allow things like telepathy or cloud memory.

Those would be amazing advances, but they could also be misused to spread disinformation and propaganda, among other problems. But we are at least a few decades away from that, the technology is nowhere near mature enough yet.

Shitty day given that Bob Saget is just a footnote in my world.

Those kids in the Bronx didn't deserve that.

Nietzsche was a prick, but occasionally made unfortunate, yet salient points..

It's looking like COVID things are slowing down in NY, and it was never much of a disaster in NYC due to the 90% vaccination rate. Still, I'd like to be able to do an in-person Super Bowl party this year. Bonus if my wife can come. The lupus recovery has been slow but steady for her, although she's still COVID positive three weeks in because of the immunosuppressants (asymptomatic at this point).

Going to such an event is dependent on her saying yes, and it's unclear if she will. It might just be "me, her, brother-in-law, and a friend" for social events for a month or so.
