  • Xenforo Cloud upgraded our forum to XenForo version 2.3.4. This update has created styling issues to our current templates, this is just a temporary look. I added "Super Dark Mode" as an add-on in chrome and turned on dark mode for the site. There are other add-ons that work similar.
 
The new update broken the code they have written on top of the Xenforo site dealing with the old website design. Once they fix whatever issues there are with the code due to the change in the API, the site will be back to normal. I hate dealing with APIs.

you mentioned those windmill cookies in another thread yesterday. i loved those as a kid... was wondering if you every had these? my dutch heritage friend/neighbour/soccer goalie who i still know to today used to have them at his place all the time.

For the first time, I've been tempted to get another tattoo (my avatar is the one I have). The guy I got mine from is doing a sale on pink designs and I'd be down to get a Kirby design. Only thing stopping me is money.

I don't think I have ever seen those cola things? They kind of look like the wax juice bottles that I remember from the 70's.

Apparently they still make them.
 
I don't think I've seen less humanity from people online than the reactions to the LA wildfires. I saw one person say that she was bummed that it isn't solely affecting wealthy people like when it was just running through the Palisades. First of all, that's an awful thing to wish upon anyone, and secondly, it's not like their wealth and well-being are going up in smoke (literally), they've got stuff insured. I've also heard certain news reports and other people celebrating them because it'll smoke out (again, literally) Diddy and the rest of those creeps. There's a lot of pointing of fingers at certain recent events and local political decisions. While that may explain why things are worse than they could be, it isn't helpful right now. Meanwhile, I texted a friend who told me that she's well within the smoke inhalation area of LA.

Being on Bluesky over the last couple of days is reminding me why I left Twitter almost a decade ago. Tech platforms have manipulated us into being complete barbarians that lack empathy for their fellow man. I wish forum culture was more widespread and we didn't have to congregate on a handful of platforms that encourage you to be a piece of shit.

Most of social media was a mistake and isn't worth reading.

I have family who lives out there, they are fine currently but they have tons of friends that they know and friends of friends that they know who have lost absolutely everything. The devastation is awful. People forget plenty of regular people live there too.

Ya know I've kinda changed my mind on this a few times, and I'm beginning to think that whatever it takes to motivate people to perform good acts is alright by me.

Wrt social media and the fires, I have to admit that I've never lived during a time where we've evolved into a situation of class warfare and distrust of institutions and systems.

As a GenXer, we grew up in a rebound of the social unrest of the 60s and the 'question authority' mantra has us ironically actually questioning the 'never trust anyone over 40' anarchists, and we also expected and got bad outcomes -- believing that we were about to be blown up at any moment, seeing the space shuttle blow up in our classrooms... And the media was super cringe full of predatory creeps... Just watch any 80s movie to see what we thought the world was like.
You were supposed to change yourself, so the 90s grunge thing was our shot at being different... And we literally coasted to 9/11 which just reinforced our blind faith in govt and institutions.

I think GenY and Z have it right with forcing systemic change and we're closer to the anarchists of the 1890s-1920s where there's a chance at rewriting society. The UNHC CEO getting assassinated and the eat the rich sentiments are going somewhere and I'm not sure where that is... But I'm hopeful this is the start of something great, even if there will be some wild years that we need to get through before society evolves into something bigger and better than what we're seeing. I'm very optimistic.

That’s an interesting outlook. I agree that the ancient and decaying corpses that make up Gen X had a bleak view of the world and were exposed to 60s counterculture and its spillover (early SNL and SCTV for example) and it had a big impact on their worldview. But that group are all eating applesauce through a straw and senile at this point.
