Wait 50 years

I laugh cause it's true.

This upcoming year I turn 55...seems like I've been waiting for this year since I was 22 years old.
You have those laws of averages with stocks. Ive read they say they double every 7 or 8 years. In 50 years that’s roughly 6 or 7 doublings. But they don’t want people to retire until 70 in todays world so the stocks are sitting a while if you start a 401k in your 20s

I actually took the reverse approach and created a portfolio of ETFs and stocks and a Roth in my 20"s. I was a contractor at the time with no 401k. So I made sure that I was paying myself first.

It wasn't until I was 29 that I had a 401k. I don't plan on raiding that for at least another 7 years.

My folks retired full time when they were around 75. Maybe they worked part time after 70? Here we are about 12-100 years later and they still have some later year sticks that have to mature to be worth selling. My step father was buying stocks on margin until earlier this year. He finally stopped but left to his own devices he’d keep buying despite the fact that his chances of ever enjoying the fruits of his buying are slim to none. If I could have put about $100k during the first 10 years after I graduated law school it would probably be worth about $1 mil right now.

My wife and I both max out our 401ks each year, and invest it in index funds. We don't plan to touch any of that.

Barring anything crazy happening to the entire economy, by the time we retire we should be doing pretty well.

Do Roth also if you can. Tax free at the end.

And if a Health Savings Account is available in your plan do it...it has been very good to me. Triple tax free...Lots of restrictions on the spend but as a smaller emergency fund the advantages are enormous.

Yes, it is Roth for now, though I believe we should switch over to traditional 401k at some point. It depends on whether we think we'll be in a higher tax bracket now or in retirement.

For me the Roth account was always meant to be a way to create the level of income I wanted and reduce the tax burden.

So I can keep my taxable 401K distribution lower staying in a modest bracket and then supplement it with nontaxable Roth portion.

But I can't touch any of that until I'm 59&1/2 by law. So that part of my plan is still a little bit away.

I haven’t seen any myself but my apparently they have been all over my neighborhood the past week. I’m in lake Hopatcong about 4 mins from Picattiny Arsenal. My coworker in Denville has seen them too right over his house. You hear everything from they are loud, slow, and big to small, silent and incredibly maneuverable.

Very strange

My one piece of advice for anyone looking to save for retirement - don’t have three kids and pay for private school and college.
One of the good things about foster parenting is that you get plenty of stuff covered (WIC, Medicaid, day care voucher, monthly cash payments) and it’s temporary.

Although, the twins that were our first placement have just been placed under our care. We volunteered to be there for them instead of chancing it with strangers. I have no earthly idea when they’ll be good to go back given that the parents f***ed up big time, especially the dad. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

I’m sure they are unique and special kids. Maybe you won’t have three but you might just have gotten two. Shower them with love and affection.

Both, what rink are you near?
They’re all a hike for me these days but ISCA in North Arlington and Inman in Edison have ball hockey. DM me if you want names to contact and inquire.

I haven't seen the ayys, but I'm right under the Morristown airport flight path so there's always blinking lights in the sky. As long as they don't blow us up I'll be proud that they chose the Garden State to make first contact.

I’m going to a Friendsgiving with some high school friends today. I haven’t seen most of these guys in almost 15 years. Crazy how fast the time goes.

I’m making a mushroom Wellington, garlic mashed potatoes, and garlic aioli. Should be good.
So you want everyone to smell?

What's your channel name? I'll check it out if I can put the subtitles on!
