I said earlier that if the Jets hit the net more often they'd be a lot better. They keep losing these close games because they don't take their chances. I thought they played very well last night, apart from that.

Ladd stood out yet again. Captain leading by example. 14th in the league now in goals with 8. Not bad for a fringe 2nd liner ;)

Laddy is actually tied for 10th with 6 other players.

He won't be able to sustain his shooting percentage though. (23.5%)

Guys we clearly need to watch the opposing-teams-homer-announcing to get the truly unbiased review of the jets.....cus you know, its not like they have a vested interest in talking about how bad the opposing team is :sarcasm:

How about we give each other the benefit of the doubt, that maybe, just maybe, we are an educated fan base and are capable of making our own interpretations of our teams play.

there isn't an objective broadcast team in the NHL...even when the games on stations like CBC there seems to generally be a slant towards toronto, montreal, and ottawa.

Honestly TSN-jets its probably by far one of the LEAST homer broadcasts in the national hockey league, just watch a bruins feed...now THAT's homer....

Did you all watch the same game? lol, the posts on here - really? best game of the year for some players? Wow! TSN Jets can turn water in to wine.

May I make a polite suggestion - turn off your HD TSN Jets channel for one period next game. I know it does suck but go online and locate an away broadcast. You might be surprised at some the replays and comments they give. Just a thought.

If you really want to read posts from people with no clue or objectivity, read posts from your fellow Edmontonians where they not only think Gagner and Petry for Bogosian and Jokinin isn't laughable, but that Winnipeg actually wins that trade.

Didn't see that he was tied, just checked nhl.com for a couple of seconds and saw him at 14. If his % is that high, though, then yeah he won't keep it up. He's contributing more than his fair share though. Very happy with him this season.

the ice level guys are pretty good at being neutral. particularly Mike. sometimes it even bugs me because he'll be talking about how great the opposition player was when he scored a goal. I don't need to relive it with praise from 'our' guy.

agreed, i really like him, he really just seems to call it like it is. Sometimes i think he's off on his calls, but he does that both positively for the other team, and positively for our team.

We have a pretty level broadcast team. VERY level considering some of the teams you hear.

Agreed. Beyak is pretty even and I don't really detect any homerism from him whenever I can catch a TSN-Jets feed. It could just be due to how relatively new the team is to the area, compared to how long some of the others have been. I also find that TSN is pretty neutral in its biases.

Some of us were calling for a win by any means before the game. I was talking about "good down home cheating"!

When Kane cross checked the Sabres defender in the back behind the net to free up the puck on the Little goal... Well that's when I thought we had a good chance.

Burmi had 5 give aways that I counted, 4 of them were terrible cross ice passes near our blue line. The fact that none of them ended up as a goal against was amazing. But as we know he's been playing good this year so hopefully he'll bounce back quick from that.

Don't like the idea of what the Stall brothers will do to us.

I like the challenge of Carolina and the Staal brothers in their house. They are co-division leaders and it’s a game we need if we want to put together a run on this road trip. Let’s face it we are a bit of a long shot now unless we reverse the results of the previous 10 games so "up at em".....what do we really have to lose?

I don't find him a homer in an obnoxious way, but he tends to try to come up with statistics that make whatever situation the Jets are in seem more positive than it objectively is. His wishful thinking bubbles to the surface a lot, probably just a bit subconsciously.

I like him but I find his obsession with meaningless and obscure stats a bit tiresome. I know it's not just him, but I much preferred the traditional system where one guy called the play and the other guy was the colour commentator who spoke when the play was stopped. The constant chattering, while play is going on, about what "NHL game" this is for so-and-so and other trivialities really detracts from the game. Personally, I'm excited by and interested in the hockey game, not in reams of stats. When even the team's announcers aren't interested enough to follow what's going on on the ice, it takes away from the experience. Anyway, I do like the Jets announcers but it would be appreciated if they could leave the chatter and stats-talk for the breaks and between periods, or for really dead parts of the play like when someone is skating to touch the puck for icing.

A shot at a top 3 pick. :P

Seriously, I just want to feel pride in our team.

Johnson is good as long as the team isn't playing against Montreal. He loves them.

From my experience, these days that's pretty much every play by play team. I will admit i really dislike when the color bleeds over into game-action as well, but it seems to happen with every broadcast i watch, happened with the flyers when i used to follow them.

yea to the bolded we still might have a shot at that ;)

I agree on the pride part though and also creating the right culture to retain the RFA's, and retain and attract the UFA's until our feeder system is in place, We really don't need a top 6 pick if we have the right organization in place (Ownership, President, GM). It would help but we don't need it (see Boston and Detroit). There is good value to be had outside the top 6 this year and I would prefer this group of Jets learns, grows, and competes every game right to the horn that ends the season.

Interesting thread on the Florida board - they've done this for a couple of years now, based on Sather talking about divvying up the season into 5 game chunks, and looking for 6 points every 5 games in order to guarantee a playoff spot.

Here's the FLA thread that discusses this:

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1325199

They've switched it up to 5pts every 4 games to guarantee a spot (around 56pts for the year) to account for the shortened season.

Plugging in the Jets numbers, this is where they are:

SET|*********|*********|*********|*********|SET POINTS|TOTAL POINTS|VS GOAL|DIVISION|CONFERENCE|PACE
1st 4| OTT (L 4-1) | @ BOS (SOL 3-2) | @ WSH (W 4-2) | PIT (W 4-2) |5|5|EVEN|2|5|60
2nd 4| NYI (OTW 5-4) | @ MTL (L 4-3) | @ FLA (L 6-3) | @ TBL (L 8-3) |2|7|-3|2|10|42
3rd 4| FLA (OTW 3-2) | TOR (L 3-2) | @ OTT (W 1-0) | PHI (L 3-2) |4|11|-4|3|11|44
4th 4| PIT (L 3-1) | BOS (L 3-2) | @ BUF (W 2-1) | @ CAR|2|13|-5.4|3|11|41.6
5th 4| @ PHI| @ NJD| @NYR|NJD|x|x|EVEN|x|x|x
6th 4|WSH| @ FLA| @TBL| @ FLA|x|x|EVEN|x|x|x

So:

Need 56 points in 48 games
Have 13 points in 15 games
Need 43 points in 33 games

Record from here on in needs to be 21-11-1 to guarantee a playoff spot. The potential saviour here is the guaranteed spot the SE Division winner gets - at this stage, the easiest way into the playoffs is via defeating the SE teams to take the Divisional title.

Just do eeit, Jets!

Huh, must have imagined the LLW line pinning the opposition down in their zone pretty much every time they were on the ice then... Too bad, hoped that Wheeler could start playing like last season, but I guess that's out the window then!

I don't mind the blend (Bleeding) to tell you the truth and think it is a natural evolution of the craft "if its done well". The one up one down is a nice way for the game to be called and I like the ice level feedback. TV play be play really evolved from the radio broadcasts when you couldn't see the play and I still like it for player identification but on balance now I don't want the deep detail of what they are doing but do appreciate they mention who is doing it.

As to Beyak I like the guy. It also helps he spent time away from the booth helping build organizations in the WHL so he does have working knowledge of the job.

Beyak's 41-year career in sports also includes stints outside of the broadcast booth, as he was the assistant general manager of the Saskatoon Blades from 1981-1990, the general manager of the Seattle Thunderbirds from 1992-1994, and the general manager of the Tri-City Americans from 1994-1995. He was also the chairman of the Memorial Cup tournament in Saskatoon (1989) and Seattle (1992), and was named WHL Executive of the Year in 1989.

I get a good vibe from Dennis when he is being interviewed on the Rona Round table, H & L, or XM home Ice.....he comes across as a guy that is plugged in and can inform without flaming players or sources. To me he seems to have substance and credibility

21-11-1 will not happen unless Pavs goes on a major run and it puts it all in perspective. We have dug ourselves a hole that only a crazy win streak can get us out of now.

Agreed on all points, my dig on color bleeding etc was mostly into relation when its carrying over anecdotal/unrelated conversation when something exciting is going on th eice.

I can't remember what game it was now or where the call was from (i think CBC?) but the two guys were talking about hair when there was a huge back and forth swing between the two teams and i was just left awestruck.

Yep. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer. :(

That said, I'll be cheering for that win streak that might make it possible!

Note: we could also pull off 43pts with other combos of wins, losses, and loser points, such as 19-9-5

Potvin is terrible for doing that in the Sens games. He's famous for going completely off topic for minutes on end.

There's a really good website that track's the probability of each team making the playoffs. Its updated everyday and it takes every game into account.

Bad News: The Jets have a 13.9% chance of making the playoffs, based on their record today.

Good News: The Jets odds improved by 4.2% last night alone.

When we went on that huge run in December last year, our odds went from 20ish percent to 60%. We need another one of those runs. Now would be a good time.

That's definitely a very cool site. What I like about what the Florida posters are doing (via Sather's thought process) is that it ignores what other teams are doing, and focuses on a statistical number that guarantees a playoff spot. Puts the team in the driver's seat. Or perhaps has them bailing out as the car heads for the brick wall.

It really does come down to goaltending. Montreal is 1st in the EC right now - they were 15th last year. Anaheim is 2nd in the WC right now, 13th last year.

In an 82 game season, hot/cold streaks tend to even out. The 48 game short season will be defined by those streaks. We need Pavs to play like he did last night for the next 33.
