did chuckles get hired somewere ?
Do you forget Zito traded a 1st just to rent Chiarot?

That Tampa traded a 1st just to rent David Savard?

That there were multiple teams trying to trade for Risto when the Flyers got him?

That Risto has improved significantly under Torts and Shaw?

That big physical RHD are actually a rare commodity around the league and valued by contenders (Tanev)?

You're letting your personal animus against Risto cloud your judgment if you think he's going to be difficult to move.

And you are crazy the other way.

Retaining 50% on expiring Walker is just part of doing deadline business.

Retaining 50% on Risto for 3 MORE YEARS is completely different. You can't just ignore having dead cap space for 3 more years.

In your theoretical:
they both get similar returns
Trading Walker means we add the 2nd and have Risto at 5.1
Trading Risto at 50% mean we add a 2nd, spend 5 on Walker and have 2.5 in dead cap space FOR 3 MORE YEARS.

So the difference of the 2 is now like paying Walker 7.5 for 3 years. You can't just ignore that and sweep it under the carpet. AND it ties up a retention spot for other potential deals. All this matters.

We know the Flyers are not winning anything this year. You sell Walker, Seeler and Laughton to build more of a potential pipeline when they could win. And you use the 11 million these 3 could be making next year, on something more impactful.

If you want to improve that defense with a non rebuild way.

There is Forsling or Skjei in the summer. Not guaranteed they hit FA but much better money spent than on a reborn cripple in Walker or Seeler.

They will not need to retain 50% on Risto for 3 yrs.

If they're that in love with them, the easy answer is to tell them your best offer before trading them and that it will be on the table 7/1. Even chance both Walker and Seeler get exposed in a different system and are begging for the offer on the second day of free agency.

Emily Kaplan:

“Sean Walker is likely the next man up. Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere told me he'd like to re-sign both Walker and his defense partner, Nick Seeler, but he didn't know if it would be possible. With little traction for new contracts, it appears they're poised to be moved -- especially Walker.”

Also mentioned steep price tag for Laughton, Flyers taking calls but not shopping him.
Really sounds like a rebuild to me
