This place is wild. I can't wait to see when these trades go through and everyone clamoring for the deals will be saying Briere sucks because he didn't get enough and should have held out for more (or if he gets a lot saying baselessly that we would have gotten more if we traded in the offseason or the assets would have been better used this draft rather than next draft).

Also have to take into account that Briere as a new GM probably got a lot of lowball offers from other GMs testing how desperate he was to tank and look like he's rebuilding. By being patient, he's sending a message that he's not going to be rushed into bad deals.
I hope you're right, dead. At the same time, it would be peculiar in the face of the leaked (planted?) trade offers.

Well no. Hextall was trying for a legit retool by keeping guys around that could be major vets by the time some prospects come up. It was wrong, but it made some sense.

Now what Briere is doing sounds like he is just ensuring that we are going to get value for our most valuable pieces. It isn't a fire sale and treating like it is one with TOP assets would be stupid for Briere. Trading Konecny for low offers would be a bad decision for a rebuilding team. I have to imagine other GMs are licking their chops when they deal with Philly after Fletch's tenure (and the first few trades under Briere's tutelage), so hopefully Briere holding firm with the TK & Hart asks will help across all negotiations that we can't be taken advantage of.

Will it work? I don't know - but I think that's the better route for the franchise to note give players away when you don't have to.

Konecny’s value will not be higher than it is currently. Especially with a smart team being willing to retain to maximize said value. Imo anyway. Unless people trust his outburst last season, and I do not trust his body to hold up with that style as much as I enjoy his play.

Same goes for Laughton. They did the same BS last season when Provorov, Sanheim, and Laughton should have been moved before the season even began.

The biggest thing is the Flyers are willingly worsening their draft position by keeping these players. A few more losses can mean a much better player in the draft.

It’s Hextall 2.0 as far as I am concerned. They dealt an optics headache in Provorov who Wanted out anyway, and maybe TDA. Dumped off Hayes for “culture” but no asset return. That’s not a rebuild. They are trying to play the middle ground yet again.

They haven’t signed any big FA’s but we will see if that’s the case once they get more cap space next season.

Value is only what people will pay. Their own cap structure will dictate how much they can/willing to pay. Perhaps later in the season, those teams will get more liberal with their space when injuries come, pending UFAs start making demands, etc.

TK is a chip we would be silly to sell low on IF we're only getting lowball offers. It all depends. But generally, Briere is doing everything right by letting it leak they're happy with TK and he's not included in a fire sale. That's attempting to extract value.

Whatever we did last year isn't as relevant since Fletcher was the one doing it. He's a dope so we can't judge Briere by what Fletch did.

You've got to have perspective here. The offseason hasn't really been that long. You can't expect a franchise to go scorched Earth immediately. It'll take some time to extract value from these pieces. Otherwise, you end up paying teams to take good players that can contribute for many years. I totally get wanting to make the team worse to get a top pick, but it may mean the difference between going into a draft with 2 or 3 1sts round picks vs. 1 just because we didn't do the dance a little bit.

I would also like to point out that the Flyers are currently sitting on a princely cap sum of $1,272,905. This comprises:
  • 12 forwards, including Couturier and Atkinson
  • 7 defensemen
  • Ryan Ellis' full salary
  • 3 goaltenders
  • $5,425,595 in dead cap from the Hayes retention, Oskar buyout and bonus overage from last season

It does not include to cap hit to which they resign Morgan Frost.

So if we expect that Petersen ($1,150,000 of his salary) and Laczynski ($762,500) get demoted and Frost's cap is optimistically $2.5 million, then they will end the offseason with $685,405 to wheel and deal. Sure, Ellis will be put on LTIR (probably), giving them up to $6.25 million extra to play with, but am I fair in expecting more cap flexibility for a rebuilding team to jump into deals so they can garner assets?

Just gained an extra $3.33m in cap space.

You can also expect Sandstrom or Petersen to be waived to start the season. It's unlikely they will carry 3 goalies.

Right but the talk and actions are much more in line Torts getting what he wants. Hayes and trying for TDA. With retention. Trying to trade Sanheim. Those are the guys on Torts and Jones’ shit list. Provy wanted to leave and was on a list too I believe.

Laughton and TK have value but are not moved. Rumor is that Laughton was offered for a 2023 1st and a 2024 2nd. They didn’t take it. TK I could see as a TDL. Hart until the investigation is done. The rest are telling.

If they don’t trade TK and Laughton, but trade Hart, I’ll give them a B at this point.

IF that rumor was true, the offer for Laughton was probably #29 and Toronto's 2nd rd pick next year, which will probably be 50+.
So while it's always a gamble, holding out for a shot at a better 1st rd pick is not a bad move.

I don’t fully disagree.

The idea of selling low is an assumption though. We don’t know what teams are offering. I’d wager it’s not garbage however, and holding on to TK risking a lower output season, or injury for let’s say a slightly better return I have concerns with.

The added bonus of games lost with him off the team is also an element.

I personally think, as there is no proof either way that the Flyers are more inclined to just hang on to the player, especially Torts.

Instead they didnt take the deal and moved a future 2nd for a goalie.

I think it is too early to make those calls. There are reports of what was offered but we don't know really what the circumstances were or are. Trying to trade Sanheim to me shows they are looking at a rebuild. Both things can be true, Sanheim is on Torts' shit list and he needs to be traded for the rebuild. It's funny to me that people here love to believe tweets and media reports when it says something happened that is in line with what they think happened, and then when other reports come out people here love to say the media is making it up or it isn't true or whatever.

Don't get me wrong, this organization has repeatedly made poor management decisions, personnel decisions, etc., but at the same time there is something to be said for holding certain guys to be flipped at a later date. We don't need all the assets immediately or for one draft/offseason. Some guys value may increase as they get closer to the TDL. I have been shocked in the past, but I would be shocked if they really are planning on holding on to guys like the Neck or Laughton for the duration of the rebuild.

You need shots now to be ready when Michkov is here. It’s not happening, but ideally you have a window that opens as soon as Michkov is here. You have him on ELC and could have two phase plan. Phase 1 is pay someone elite or a few players a lot while Michkov is on ELC. Then phase 2 when you have to pay Michkov. It’s not happening though.

Sanheim got benched in his home town and he still has no idea why. No one even talked to him about it. He’s not the kind of player that should really ever be benched. That’s like someone telling their wife they want a divorce bc she’s not Megan Fox. Sanheim is not super consistent and not a #1. His being traded is much more in line with Hayes and TDA moves than anything else. We are obviously talking now so yea views could change in a month. But that’s only if Harts traded and hear the Laughton return is less than we heard and that TK has low ball offers. It’s all unlikely.

Definitely not arguing about Sanheim being Torts' shit list. That's pretty clear. But he needs to go regardless. Sanheim has been here for literally almost a decade now. He is what he is, a decent second pair defender signed to a long term deal over $6 million AAV. If the Flyers signed a guy that was 27 with a similar profile to the same deal people would be calling for Briere's head (and probably saying 'he's 6'3" that's why they want him!'). He has no value for the tank and no value long term here. If someone will take him I'd be fine trading him for nothing to get rid of the contract, which will likley become harder to do as time passes unless he all the sudden turns into a better defenseman while playing on a worse team. On a contending team he has value. Here he does not and won't for the duration of the tank. I honestly thought he and Provolone would be traded last season.

They aren't holding out for a better pick, they simply have no intention of trading him because they are not rebuilding.

He will do well next year and then have value. I agree moving him before the NTC was the right move, but not for nothing. He will be better next year and can then be moved. He controls that, but I think he would be fine going home.

The overall point is that Sanheim is not the clue to what’s going on. Hayes and TK are. Those two are who you are looking at to garner info. There no point retaining on Hayes just to move him. You should be trading a prime TK as he has no place on this future team.

This seems backwards. Sanheim, a 27 year-old defenseman who throughout his career has basically remained stagnant on a huge contract (both in terms of dollars and length) will increase in value, but TK, a player that is younger and on a friendlier contract that has consistently improved and is now the focal point of the offense, will decrease in value? Neither of these guys factor in long term. They both should be dealt.

Dead serious, if the Flyers signed a 6'3" 27 year old defenseman with a career high of 35 points to a 7 year $6+ million deal what would your reaction be? My guess is furious. I know I would be. Trade him for whatever gets rid of him. That's a guy you don't hold on to in hopes of improving his value on a sinking ship where is defensive metrics are likely to plummet even more ESPECIALLY if Hart is traded. The Neck will likely be the leader of the team in points and by the time the TDL rolls around will have 1.5 years left at under $6 million. That's the time to strike for him.

The problem with waiting is what this team probably needs more than anything else is an extra Top 10 pick. But there's no chance to get one at the deadline because teams out of the playoff race don't trade their 1sts. So holding on to someone like TK because you don't like the current offers only ensures that the top asset in an eventual trade is a >20 pick. Just completely idiotic.

Or maybe multiple firsts or a first and a good prospect. We have AMPLE time to trade these guys. Sure a late first and another second would have been nice, but JFC we made ten picks already in the draft this year you want two more? The rebuild was never going to take one off-season or one draft. If I'm GM I am hoarding picks for the next several drafts. Very unlikely outside of the Neck and Hart that any of our players would return a first other than Farabee who I think they should keep. Now we have ammo to get more picks in next year's draft and the following year. Spread it out. If someone was going to pay a 1st for Laughton at the draft, they're going to be willing to pay that at the TDL. TK should be able to rack up points as the only real established offensive threat and his value will increase.

Everyone needs to relax.
