Rumor: Things Not Left Unsaid 3 - Flyers Rumors and Media Mentions: Never Ending Circles

"Now, with the team improving and the plan to build a contender in the next 18 months commencing"

1.5 years. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this still sticking to that original timeline they laid out? They really are this delusional.

The Flyers have chosen a pathway where they need to hit on a Panarin-type free agent, draft multiple elite players outside the top 10, and/or swing a once in a blue moon trade for an elite player. Probably not just one of those either to turn into an annual contender.

Not only do they not do this, but they reject it when it’s plausibly available. It’s a nonfunctional strategy by design.

“But like I said, when you’re not spending $12 million on a player, or even two like Edmonton does… Colorado has three or four high-end guys. We’re not going to be built that way. So depth will be important to us.”

Yea who needs 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 really good guys, when you can have 6 or 7 just okay guys.

And then the rest is shit.

There isn’t another center in the league scoring 90-100 points in his prime (with a career point/game) who is not a 1C. Down years are why these guys get moved.🤷‍♂️

The contract is from ages 26-33, so term isn’t an issue at either end (too short or too old). If the money lowers the price, I’m even more interested. I’d do an Eichel return in a nanosecond. The Flyers have almost nothing of importance tied up in their cap where I’m worried about salary. I just don’t have to think twice about Tippett + Farabee salary going to Pettersson. And the cap is projected to rise $4MM.

But I think the key point is this: the Flyers don’t want a big contract or a big name player. They’d talk themselves out of a MacKinnon trade.
Lets also remember the following players were labeled as poor playoff players before they weren't and won cups for their teams:
  • Steve Yzerman
  • Joe Sakic
  • Alex Ovechkin
  • Pavel Datsyuk
  • Ray Bourque
  • Teemu Selanne
  • Brendan Shanahan
This list could go on and on. Point is most playoff disappointing players are disappointing until they aren't. Bet on talent not on weird perceptions of a player.

Crosby and Malkin were transformed into playoff chokers at one point, too.

Stamkos was also famous as a playoff choker. And Bob.

He had a documented knee injury last postseason. He had 18 points in 17 games his only other time there. Obsessing over a few playoff games is always a big whatever for me (and Flyers fans should know better with Giroux’s last 3 runs), although he doesn’t seem to be healthy this year either. Understanding any physical dip is my only reason for hesitation. The Flyers aren’t making this trade though.

A friend of mine said we should trade Laughton, Risto, Two Firsts for EP.

There would be a press conference where Torts had to wipe tears from Briere's face if they asked for Laughton in a trade. There would be a hashtag on the ice and a themed jersey night for survivors.

However, i do wonder if Frost, Risto, Two Firsts moves the needle at all

It isn't like Briere is gonna use the two firsts for anything better.

I don’t think this is just a downswing. I think this is closer to the norm for EP.
Well, that's the $64K question.
Why did he peak, why did he fall off, why is he in the middle of a clubhouse controversy?
When you take on a contract this size, you'd better have good answers to these questions.

One thing that would worry me is his inconsistency, pp/60 (5x5) last four seasons: 1.60, 3.05, 2.53, 1.60
Another concern, FOs, 44.1%, 44.3%, 50.8%, 45.4%.

Two good seasons, then he falls off the cliff after his big contract (signed March 2024).

Why keep a dollar when you can have 20 nickels?

I have no doubt he would spend that on a homegrown player if he were worth it. Would he spend it on a UFA?

Would you want him to?...

Bingo. This draft blows

My bad, I'll cut Pettersson some slack if he was hurt in the playoffs last year, but he really looked disinterested. It was not pretty. He's an elite talent, for sure, but if we think Frost is a misused whipping boy, I can't imagine what fate might befall EP if the Flyers somehow managed to acquire him.

Yeah, you can't trade for EP with Torts still head coach. It'd be like buying a Ferrari and filling it up with diesel.
