There is nothing wrong with Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares.

This needs to be said and understood by a lot more people. It’s 100% accurate. But you'll hear “excuses” as a response which is lazy
I mean McDavid had 7 points in 4 games against the Avalanche in 2022 when they won the cup

The next year he had 10 points in 6 games against the Vegas GK who won the cup

The next year he had 8 points in 6 games vs Dallas and 11 points against the Panthers in the SC final

Are you trying to say McDavid doesn’t face tough competition in the playoffs? He faces more than “the kings”

The Oilers lost 3 years in a row to the cup winners and went to the WCF 3 of the last 4 years. It’s not McDavids fault the NHL is set up the way it is, but it doesn’t hold him down and he isn’t getting all his points against the kings. I’m not sure what you are on about.

Matthews was absolutely dominating to start the game, you could tell he had clicked it into a higher gear
Yeah, but he needs to show it consistently, I’m not ready to forgive 9 years of performances because of 1 game. Tonight will be big a test and Matthews has the opportunity to send a strong message if the leafs can win on home ice and head to the ECF for the first time since most of Leafs Reddit have been alive.

Yea nothing wrong with not winning in the playoffs. They just won't be among great players who excelled in the playoffs. Its a different game. 100% more difficult. Yea its a team game but those guys have to make plays at key times because they are key players. People are ragging on kucherov but he's still a great overall playoff producer and have made key plays at key times for the Lightning and so did Brayden point. Probably most clutch for us during those spans that were nost effective. But you lean on your best players and that's OK. Its OK they aren't that but we shouldn't pretend they are just because they play in Toronto or that the playoffs in general are difficult. Its a challenge for sure and one they haven't proven they've been able to do much noise. Even McDavid hasn't won anything but he's proven far more than they have.

That is also McDavid.

Yes i was responding to a guy who said McDavid only goes off because he faces LA every year

Here is what i was responding to
It's like the opposite of Oilers where McDavid and Draisaitl get to feast every year in a free 1st round match-up against the Kings. Maybe the Oilers duo wouldn't elevate their game so much in the playoffs if they had to play prime Tampa or Florida every year on the first round.

Which of course is absurd.

As a team, when you reach the point where you feel that the players have enough experience, and the team as a whole has the type of player mix that you need in order to win, "moral victories" don't matter. Only winning does. The stats and situations that are being thrown around here are just that. Maybe not "moral victories" in the traditional sense, but evidence that the situation isn't what it is and growth can be had.

First it was they can't get past Boston. Then it was they can't get past the first round. Then it was they're in a stacked Atlantic division. It's been depth, it's been defense, it's been goaltending, it's been injuries, it's been a million different things.

They have lost in the playoffs so many times to so many different teams in so many different situations that there is very little they haven't faced.

There is absolutely an element whereby the only way you learn how to win, is by losing and seeing what it takes to win, but what else does this group really need to learn?

And who knows, maybe they win tonight and move on and all of this is moot. We'll see.

Kucherov has zero game 7 points and his team still seems to win a few of them.

I think Matthews needs to play better, but hockey is a team sport, sometimes you need people to step up who don't normally do it, Leafs never get run support outside of the top players.
Why can’t the guys paid like $40M be the ones who step up…..?

There is nothing wrong with each of them individually. It’s just laughable their management think they can win playoffs with essentially four high skill forwards worth between 10 to 15 Million in a cap world. The Oilers have difficulty building a playoff team around two. Such an ill-conceived team.

Update: It was not moot.

Unpopular opinion but the lack of playoff success is mostly due to unluckily becoming a contender at the same time as Florifa and Tampa.

But they also got lucky with the draft lottery so whatever.

I've been saying it for years. Since all 4 were on high contracts

They were too top heavy in those 4 that it took away from their depth in F and roster depth

With the cap going up the past few years it has helped thrm some in their depth

They lost to the Blue Jackets in 2020.
Habs in 2021
They lost to the Bergeron-less Bruins last year and then the Bruins missed the playoffs.

5 different teams elimated them across 6 seasons.
