There is nothing wrong with Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares.

Bryan Hayes played it out clearly

It wouldnt surprise him in the slightest if Marner is resigned. He doesnt want it to happen. But it wouldnt surprise him if an extension came out of the blue.
The farm system isnt exactly busting with young talent, high picks are scarce, with no 1st round picks.

so do you let 100 points walk out the door?

sign and trade in the best case would be 3rd and 4th round picks.

Tavares seemed confident he is coming back
tough predicament

Thats what ive been saying. You can't just let a player of Marners caliber leave and get nothing in return. Should they have traded him a year or two ago? Maybe but letting him walk out the door right now would be bad. If he's willing to stay with Toronto at a reasonable number then why not keep him.

For all the "use that cap space elsewhere" talk... please point out who they could sign and for how much. Are they really better off overpaying Sam Bennett? Depth pieces (i.e. say signing two guys for 4 million each) might help them but you're taking a risk there.

& you already know if Marner goes on to have a great season somewhere else 87% of the posters on this site are going to say the Leafs are stupid and should've re-signed him.

So bring Marner back and keep doing the same thing they have been doing? That's why NHL teams never improve, they are afraid to make the big changes. Hopefully Toronto does keep Marner, they will be a guaranteed 2nd round exit for the rest of his contract.

Doing the same thing over and over again is the definition of insanity.
Marner should have been traded years ago. Unfortunately management was too scared to make big changes and walked him to free agency. Now they will get nothing but additional cap space.
Look at Florida who was in a similar boat but Zito traded Huberdeau for Tkachuk and made some other astute trades and FA signings. That is what Toronto needs to do to get over the hump. I just don’t think Treleving is the guy who can do that.

I too was excited for this team when they went up 2 on Florida and showed sturdy defensive /structured play - then it all went to sh!t. It’s a rollercoaster at a damn haunted house dude.
