There's no guarantee that Horvat makes it to free agency, He could easily be traded to a team and then signed. So if you want him badly and it sounds like Yzerman does. Then you have to make a deal for him when you can.
Not if it means giving up Edvinsson or Casper, who'd fall under the "top prospect" category.

We shouldn’t want him that badly.

You can view this a couple ways.

One is that they are exploring a redundancy if Larkin is hellbent on taking 9+ million. Basically floating his replacement.

The other is that they are getting Larkin more talent to play with and increase is willingness to flex on contract if he has more help.

Honestly... I think both those things are true.
If that stuff came from a source within the organization, and it's written like it definitely is, you can bet your ass that SY authorized it. They may indeed be interested in Horvat, but maybe they're also using him for cover while exploring something else outside the box.

HSJ, for all the criticism she receives, generally only prints stuff of this nature if she gets from the team.

On the 32T podcast Friedman said his opinion is Detroit is in on Horvat, but if Detroit makes a deal for him it’d likely happen sooner than later so they can have time with Horvat to work out an extension. Friedman and Marek both said as of today the Canucks are not expected to allow teams to talk to Horvat prior to making a trade for him.

I'd love to add this guy, offensive center, just what we need.

But why give up assets if he's a UFA this summer? If he would be willing to sign with us now, he will be then too.

Best scenario: Some strong eastern team like Carolina trades for him, shipping talent to the west, and then he signs with us instead of them.

Maybe we are giving up assets we have too many like, Wingers, LhD.

Sportsnet's Jeff Marek reported Saturday night on the "Hockey Night in Canada" broadcast that the Canucks want "three players, including a top prospect."

The Canucks reportedly are looking for a young center in a potential Horvat deal. As we've noted before, the Bruins don't have a young center with top-six potential on their NHL roster. Brett Harrison, a 2021 third-round selection, has starred in the OHL this season with 48 points in 35 games. Matthew Poitras, a 2022 second-round pick, has posted 49 points in 37 games in the OHL. These two center prospects have exciting potential, but neither player is close to making a real impact at the NHL level right now.

A typically bad move on their part.

getting horvat IMO makes no sense unless you get him for like 7-7.5m but then again, he's a 2c ideally on a cup team. we arent a cup team but you need to aspire to be there.

i just dont see it.

Joey, Ras, Wallinder, and 2 2nds (1 this year and next). Extend Horvat, sign Larkin, sign Bert on a short deal, draft Colby Barlow to replace Ras on the wing, draft Tom Willander so the casual doesnt even know the difference, profit!

Larkin and Horvat as the 2 top line centers would be fine by me. And then if Kasper comes in next season and with Copp and Veleno in the mix as well would be a pretty good center side imo.

Plus maybe a good C in the upcoming draft as well.

If true, we are not in any position to even make an offer.

Contending teams could throw them a decent package… because it would increase their chances of winning a Cup with him as rental. Extension is a bonus.

If we trade for him. We get zero rental value and he could still leave after the season. It would be an unhinged risk.

Look at Hampus Lindholm, There's absolutely no guarantee that Bo Horvat makes it to free agency. Unless Allvin/Rutherford refuses Horvat's agent to talk contract extension with other teams and he's a pure rental then.

I dont disagree

But what do we offer that's worth it to Vancouver ?

Edvinsson?
Kasper?

Both are a no go

Vrana and Bertuzzi are just cap dumps to rebuilding teams

Rasmussen and Veleno dont move the needle

Soderblom and Berggren would interest them but we should not part with either

Zadina is garbage

A protected 1st in 2024 would be acceptable, our 2023 1st is off limits.

I just dont see a trade here
