Thanks to Wheeler's amazing pass through the forward's legs.

I don't think there is any argument that Wheeler drives the offense. Laine puts the puck in the net, but how good is he without Wheeler on the PP? I am not going to crap on him, but there is a real aversion to calling out a player to be better, in his case. He's been very poor with puck decisions. I think Wheeler was probably as pissed at Laine as the ref, for not defending on the EN goal. The kid is a star, one of the best shooters in the league, but he has to work harder to be great. Maybe not unlike a younger Ovechkin.

Wheeler PP points by year:
5
8
5
15
7
19
12
17
21 (Laine enters the league, doesn't play full time on PP1)
40
19 (so far)
How many many 30 year olds double their PP points? And blaming Laine for the EN

I mean how often do Colorado break up their top line. How often are Tavares and Marner split up? I think Monahan and Gaudreau have been broken up once.

Scheif-Wheeler are our top tandem, best passer and shooter 5 on 5. Why move the captain down the lineup. He set up Scheifele a few times. Just no results. I think you look at the 3rd piece of the puzzle. Connor did not have his best game. E-L-L were invisible except for Little's read for the board rebound on a heads up Morrissey play. Maybe the solution is 29-55-26, 85-18-27 in a game like that, but Laine was pretty unimpressive, other than his goal. Even with Little/Perreault winning him clean draws, which makes me wonder why we don't have more designed plays with Laine in a shooting position off the draw. Anyways I feel like I am caught in a
s--t storm now. Disappointing game. Cherry saying looks like torn ligaments for Buff. Montreal-Tampa 5-4 (edit 5-5). Lots of pace in that game.

Since the start of 17-18 when Scheifele-Wheeler became unbreakable:

Wheeler is 41st in 5on5 points and Scheifele is 46th.
P/60(1000min minimum) 5on5 Scheifele is 39th and Wheeler is 62nd.

Comparing this season to the players you mentioned:

P/60 5on5
Marner 3.31
Tavares 3.26
Rantanen 2.99
MacKinnon 2.79
Gaudreau 2.56
Scheifele 2.37
Monahan 2.35
Wheeler 2.11
Landeskog 2.02

Compare these numbers to 16-17 when they "only" played together 50% of their ice time:

Scheifele 2.55 p/60 (17-18 2.22)
Wheeler 1.92 p/60 (17-18 2.08)

Bryan Little spent 43.2% of his ice time with Wheeler and had 2.02 P/60
Laine spent 51.9% of his ice time with Scheifele and had 2.32 P/60

Their numbers indicate that they are far from unbreakable.

I love Wheeler, bit I do think there's some concern for finding out Wheeler isn't an 8 million dollar man without Schiefele.

Sucks losing Buff but we have been fortunate so far this season with injuries.
We are in a bit of a rough patch right now but I have no doubts we’ll work through this.
Boston, Nashville and Toronto are a few others that are also in a lull so we aren’t the only ones going through this.
This is a long regular season ( which is 10 games too many imo ) and set backs happen.
Last nights and the Calgary game sucked no question however we all know what this team is capable of so let’s down a few drinks and usher in the New Year with hopefully a win in Edmonton.
Happy New Years to all of you!

Our next game is against the Oilers in Edmonton. Without Big Buff in the lineup I'm concerned with how the Jets will do against them. I think McDavid has a tougher time playing the Jets because he's aware of Buff's presence on the ice and that he might get hit. If McDavid doesn't have to worry about that with Buff not playing, the score will definitely not be 5-0 for the Jets like it was last year on New Year's Eve in Edmonton.

You mean like last game when McDavid had his way with us?

I don't criticize Buff because he has played a pretty great brand of hockey but if he really wants skilled players to think twice about him on the ice he needs to get back to crushing guys a bit more regularly.

Problem is, the NHL no longer likes big hits (even clean ones) so his chances of getting suspended are high.

Well. Maybe we should start a poll to see what the consensus is on what level of screwed we are at...
Don't know, I'm kind of relieved the recovery window opens in a month. Strongly suggests nothing structural, and certainly nothing requiring surgery. Ever indication is a high ankle sprain, so likely about 6 weeks until the big guy is back. Might help everyone focus on the details a bit better.

Is Poolman even ahead of Niku on the Moose depth chart?

Nogier wasn't all that bad defensively when he got called up.

Should be interesting to see who gets the call, no doubt Niku is the most gifted offensively!

Guess if your just bringing a guy up to sit you recall Schilling as it's unlikely he's getting any better by playing or not playing.

Looks like Lemieux draws back in tomorrow at the expense of Appelton. I am shocked that Maurice hasn't clued into the fact that the fourth line no matter the configuration does much better with Petan on it then not. Roslovic is not looking good as a C and that combo with Lemieux and Perrault hasn't worked. I have no idea what issue he has with Nic but the kid is being jerked around by this coaching staff. I mean what more does he have to do to show he should be playing.....

Edit: Also with the PP sputtering lately wouldn't one possible solution be to use a very crafty and skilled playmaker in Petan to try to help get it going? I swear sometimes this coaching staff seems too entrenched.

It's not so much liking the coach but who I see as more accountable when it comes to adjustments in games like yesterday. I'm critical of Maurice in several areas and I've often stated that I feel he's a good coach, not a great coach, although I'm cynical as to what constitutes a great coach, it's overblown in today'sNHL.

Some games are more coaching related, some aren't . I didn't think yesterday's game was a matter of coaching , it was a matter of player execution.

Yesterday was hard to tell. Execution wasn't there, but the adjustments made were trivial and ineffective. When we are struggling to get quality scoring chances, PoMo has to get a shooter like Laine out there with Scheifele. Why does he NEVER do that? That is poor coaching.

Stubborn to be sure, agreed. The Scheifele -Wheeler handcuff, especially when trailing late is a weakness of his, no doubt .

Level of screwed (probably) :

2nd in Central, 3rd overall in the West

It should be okay. Better now than April
Jets have gained 7 and 8 points on Nash and Avs in the last ten games. I count wins and loss differential and Jets are way ahead at plus 12.
They are a lock for first place. Subban must be in one of those medical tanks where they grow you a new leg.
