Second one reminds me of Annihilation of the Wicked, which makes it relevant to my interests.

I tend to come and go on metal, but stuff like this sinks the hook.

I'm all over the map on metal. I'm an 80's kid. So all the thrash, speed metal and hair metal are what I got going on. I don't discriminate. I have just always loved the sound of a cranked distorted guitar. But, my big kicker is I have to like the vocals. Some of the gutteral and screamy stuff just doesn't do it for me. I really dig bands that can ride the edge. Where it's heavy, the vocals are just on that verge of death metal, but you can still understand it and it has melody. One of the reasons I've always been a massive Testament fan. Love of the more modern bands I dig are like that as well. Scar Symmetry, Soilwork, etc.

Two perfect examples:

Vocals are why, of Gothenburg's Big 3, I usually leaned toward At The Gates. Tomas Lindberg sounds a little burned out on the newer albums, but when he was on... maaaaaaan

I feel you on Soilwork and Scar Symmetry. Stabbing the Drama and Figure Number Five got a lot of reps in college. Cookie Monster's great, but I still appreciate the ability to carry a melody if the mood strikes you.

For all those times you think to yourself: Ya know, the Doors really needed more banjo.

Been a fan of Fates Warning since around '86. I got into them just before they dismissed John Arch. I like Arch, but I like Ray much better. Finally got to see them open for Queensryche a few years ago. Was a bit of a "dream" show for me, as I LOVE both bands. I've seen QR 11 times, but this was a first for Fates. They did not disappoint. Fantastic show.
Nice, QR and FW sounds like a f***ing amazing show (before Tate become a complete douche anyways). We are showing our age here ... but I got into FW around 95ish, and they haven't released an album I haven't liked (Prefect Symmetry and Parallels are absolute classics but the new albums are nearly as good) ... but my favorite Ray Alder albums to this day are his stint with Redemption.

This song in particular is one of my favorites, but I feel like most people won't tolerate a 16 minute song, even if it is crazy good.

For those without the attention span for a 16 minute song, check this one out (no judgment, 16 minutes is usually pretty bloated)

The music of Redemption fit his lower register so well, he clearly can't hit the high notes he hit in the late 80's early 90's with FW. That said, he is awesome in Theories of Flight (Long Day Good Night hasn't really grabbed me... yet). I am kind of bummed he's no longer with Redemption. Tom Englund is another fantastic singer (Evergrey - In Search of Truth is bananas good even if you can't legally purchase it digitally in the US for some reason), but his vocals just don't fit for my taste.

I am deep in a glass of rum and Sapphire is doing it for me. Think I'm just going to make a list of songs called "Sapphire" and listen to it until I drift off.

Man, now I'm stuck in a YouTube hole and I can't get out.

What is, objectively, the dumbest genre in all of music? Metalcore. There's no better way to reduce your IQ than listening to this nonsense, and Killswitch Engage is like the apotheosis of metalcore. Two lead singers screaming over a guy dressed like the best character from the best movie ever made playing pure brain damage. This is like 2 years old and I didn't even realize it was a thing. Kills brain cells faster than Sailor Jerry.

Edit: and speaking of In Flames - this is just a straight rip-off of Gyroscope, but if you're going to rip something off rip off the beeeest.

I love Redemption as well. Wish they'd have been able to make it work with Ray and keep him on. I was told by the Prog Power promoter that they essentially put it to Ray that it was either 'Devote more time to this band or we need to move on.' So they ended up parting ways. However, I love Evergrey and Tom Englund is a good singer as well. Very different style of vocals, but cool regardless.

There is little KSE has put out that I don't like. I love both singers.

AND, if you've not heard it, Howard has a new band called Light The Torch and they are phenomenal. They quickly became one of my fav bands. They are also going to be going on tour with KSE. Believe the show locally here is either March or April.

Also, if you're a big KSE fan, give this a listen. They're like the German version of Killswitch. I love these guys.

Dang! I completely missed this release because the band was, unfortunately, forced to change their name. Unto Others

FKA Idle Hands. Idle Hands' "Mana" was, far and away, my favorite release in 2019. Still working through this new album (and new name), but it's pretty comparable. I think I still prefer Mana, it's a little more sad boi and a lot more fun.... but I really like the new album so far. The embed track gets me all sorts of pumped up. As an example of what I mean by a little more fun... here is a song about dragons crying....

TLDR: Goth Rock. Think Sisters of Mercy mixed with The Cure with a modern hard rock sound. Probably not the most appealing description.... but you should check it out. now! I can't stop listening to that first embed.

Man... this is my new (to me) music. Female fronted multi-instrumentalist ambient black metal. Think Alcest, just with female vocals. If the description is too much for you, just listen to the riffs and drums on the embed. Love it.

I liked her last album. Didn't realize there was another one, but it seems like a whole lot of musicians have been cooped up with nothing to do but record for the last 2 years. Weird, that.

Kristoffer Rygg's protege has recorded some similar stuff as Myrkur, though I guess it's one of those outfits that angry people that use v's instead of u's will yell at you for listening to. I enjoy Mausleum a lot, though. Recorded in a creepy ass mausoleum with the Norwegian Girls' Choir.

Will have to check her out. Black metal hasn't ever really been my thing... but between this album, Mare Cognitum, Saor, Alcest...I'm starting to appreciate it. Just need some halfway decent production values, melody, and no stupid satanic theatrical lyrics and I'm in

Same team on that one. Ulver's whole discography is quite a ride, especially if you're kind of arms length with black metal. Goes from this to this to this and everywhere in between.

I really like Ryggs involvement with Borknagar, but Ulver has always been out of my grasp. I think the electronic part has always turned me off.

But maybe I haven't given them a fair shake. That first link you have is really good, and I'm intrigued at the synthwave 3rd link.

With Kamelot on a break, looks like Tommy Karevik got together with the guys from his other band. Great tune. Like it better than most of the stuff I've heard off the last 2 discs.

Can't remember if I posted anything off Ray's last disc, but this is phenomenal. And, if I remember correctly, he produced it. This is one of the best sounding albums as far as production I've ever heard. Crisp, clean, balanced sound with tight punchy base and crystal clear highs. I have $600.00 studio monitors and it's outstanding. I'd love my recordings to sound this good. He should do an online class or something on music recording and production.

Alder is, hands down, my all time favorite vocalist of all time. And yes, this album is just perfectly mastered and produced.

Also. Cult of Luna dropped their new album a bit ago. It's very, very, good. Easily the best post-metal since Isis called it a day.

Funny thing about the internet is that a lot of the best stuff just mysteriously disappears for no discernible reason. There used to be a killer video for this song all over the place, and now it's completely scrubbed for some unknown reason. Great mix of An American Werewolf in London style comedy and folk horror, but the song itself is still awesome.

Pouring one out on the curb for Ready for the Magic by Honeyblood.

Try with a Finnish VPN if you can:

Pressed post too quickly.

E: or even a Canadian one will suffice, I suppose. It's blocked in USA & Australia. That's it.

Iiiiinteresting. I don't have VPN access at the moment, but it definitely looks like a rights thing. Thanks for this.

Yea, no prob. Stuff definitely disappears at times, usually due to rights, but that's very much an odd case. They did switch labels three or so years ago, so I wonder if that's got something to do with it...

...Turns out it does. Their newer stuff is unrestricted when it comes to videos, but anything made prior to Honeyblood's last album is restricted. Interestingly, they went even harder with 'Sea Hearts':

But, I digress.

I don't mind the song at all, but as a guitar player, I loathe that guitar tone. When the rest of the band and the singer kick in, it kind of covers it up, but not enough that I can get past it unfortunately. Sounds nitpicky, I get that, but the ears want what the ears want. (Probably (most definitely) not the real quote. Yet I will manipulate it for my purposes.)

New Soilwork single is out though and I like this very much:

The intro is like a minute and a half long. So, if you're interested in just getting to the tune, have at it here:

I only recently got into Dillinger Escape Plan and have been kicking myself hard for not having done so before they broke up. But, getting into them has also turned me onto Greg Puciato's various side projects; most recently, The Black Queen. Synthwave isn't my usual fare but holy crap this is the catchiest thing I've heard in a long time:

I want to thank you and also give you the finger for this post. The Black Queen has been in constant rotation since your recommendation. Both albums are amazing. But ... you've also got me into other, much more lame, synth wave acts. My metal cred is shot now....

This is one of the not lame ones.

Age restricted so probably can't view it. Dark All Day by GUNSHIP. so good, love a good sax (old f***s like me may recognize him from Lost Boys)

Also a fan, though the nostalgia bait gimmick gets to be a little too much for me on certain songs (the one with the answering machine messages?). I have a GUNSHIP playlist that's gotten heavy rotation at work during crunch time.
