McPhee is the president now and McCrimmon is GM. But McPhee started as the GM and got promoted.

Also fun fact Shanahan tried to hire McCrimmon as an AGM and he declined and opted for Vegas instead. One can only imagine.
Yep that’s correct.

Pretty sure Steve has been in full support of firing Dubas. I listen often and he’s been on the fire Dubas train for a while and said it’s the right decision.

I didn't know that. When did Shanny try to hire McCrimmon?

I didn't know that. When did Shanny try to hire McCrimmon?

When Shanny first got here he tried to hire the best up and coming minds from the CHL. He offered McCrimmon, Dubas and Hunter roles within the organization. Dubas and Hunter said yes, McCrimmon said no. Probably understanding only 1 out of the three would eventually become GM of the leafs.

VGK - who now has more finals appearances than we do playoff series wins, was an expansion team starting in the 17-18 season, where our Leafs just came off a season full of rookie magic.

And look at how much more playoff success they've had than us, god is that fking depressing.

Babcock pushed hard for Kelly McCrimmon as soon as he joined the Leafs;

Imagine a timeline where the Leafs have Shanny and Lou with McCrimmon, Pridham, and Hunter as AGMs with Babcock as your coach.

Raftis is a good guy. He is another Kyle and he is 37 so maybe.

Frank Seravalli joins Danielle Michaud to discuss the latest news on the GM search for the Maple Leafs, where the Flames are looking for their head coach position, and the updates on the Senators sale.

According to Elloitte Friedman:

- the Toronto Maple Leafs are holding draft meetings in Kamloops, BC. Brendan Shanahan was not there.

- Brad Treliving was in Toronto last week

- there was another person who came in, it was not Peter Chiarelli or Doug Armstrong

- not Doug Wilson, Mark Hunter, or Jason Botterill

- Marc Bergevin interviewed with the Toronto Maple Leafs via Zoom

- Brendan Shanahan reached out to a lot of people and made a lot of calls

- Brad Treliving had a face-to-face interview with the Toronto Maple Leafs

- the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brendan Shanahan want to do a thorough GM search, but don't think that they have a lot of time

- a lot of the questions they have been asking the Toronto Maple Leafs: what is in the heads of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Mitch Marner?

- Brendan Shanahan told Sheldon Keefe that he likes him and his body of work

- Shanahan would like to keep the core 4 together

- the new Toronto Maple Leafs GM will have a voice in all of this

- John Tavares doesn't want to go anywhere, Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner all want to stay in Toronto

- Auston Matthews won't re-sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs by July 1, 2023

- Brad Treliving would be one of the best Toronto Maple Leafs GM candidates since he went through the same thing in Calgary

- GM candidates are asking the Toronto Maple Leafs: tell us honestly what we are getting into in here?
How would Friedman know all this, I call BS………

Blues GM Doug Armstrong declines comment on Toronto Maple Leafs GM rumor

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong is staying away from the rumors.

Reached by text message on Tuesday afternoon, Armstrong declined to comment on the various reports linking him as a candidate to be the Maple Leafs GM, citing a policy not to comment on rumors regardless of their validity. Armstrong is currently in Europe serving as the general manager for Canada at the World Championship.

Armstrong’s name has been floated by national reporters employed by Sportsnet and TSN since last week when the Maple Leafs announced that they would not renew the contract of previous GM Kyle Dubas. He is originally from Ontario and has the experience and championship pedigree that could interest a team like Toronto looking for someone to navigate their tricky upcoming years.

Armstrong, though, is under contract with the Blues for three more seasons, as his deal expires at the end of the 2025-26 season. He signed the five-year extension in September 2021.

VGK - who now has more finals appearances than we do playoff series wins, was an expansion team starting in the 17-18 season, where our Leafs just came off a season full of rookie magic.

They are also more successful than all but 5 teams, and if they win, all but 1 team in that time.

And if they win it will be the second team in the last 4 years to cheat to win.

I think we should push for Matthews to delay whatever he needs to do with his wrist/hand so that it is timed for him to come back game 1 of the playoffs.

A lot of the experienced GMs thought to be under consideration haven’t exactly been overwhelming successes in recent stops.

On the other hand, would it be prudent to turn the keys over to someone who’s never done the job before when all this has to be done and done? It would be asking a lot of someone with no general managerial experience to come in and execute so much in so little time.

The next Leafs GM is going to presumably arrive in early June and in a matter of weeks will need to address a number of priorities which include:

• Making a decision on the head coach, which means keeping Sheldon Keefe or hiring a replacement

• Convincing Auston Matthews to sign an extension

• Determining whether a star trade involving one of William Nylander or Mitch Marner makes any sense

• Trading one of those stars and doing it before July 1 when they gain control over the process

• Extending Nylander as soon as July 1, or not

• Filling numerous holes in the roster, either through free agency or trade, including a No. 2 centre and top-four defenceman

• Finding a way out from the Matt Murray contract

• Signing Ilya Samsonov

• Leading the Leafs at the draft with an unfamiliar staff

• Addressing the captaincy, or not

The GM may need to hire front-office staff as well and make the staff that do remain comfortable with a leader they don’t know and who didn’t hire them.

It’s a lot.

The draft is about four weeks away. Canada Day, when so many variables come into play beyond the start of unrestricted free agency, is less than five.

Hiring a new coach and coaching staff alone is serious business that requires an incredible amount of diligence and care. (The Leafs have put Keefe in a tough spot by leaving his future in doubt for weeks at the outset of the offseason.)

The person making all these decisions will be unfamiliar with how the Leafs’ operation works with running things past Shanahan and the famed board.

So, yeah, you can understand the organization’s preference for experience, for someone who has run an NHL team before. Which, again, doesn’t make it necessarily ideal, either in the short or long term. The Leafs won’t necessarily be hiring the best person for the job, the one who might be best suited to execute a seismic star trade and guide the franchise for years to come, but the person who has made similar(ish) moves in the past — whether those moves have worked out or not.

It’s experience that led Shanahan to hire Lamoriello out of nowhere in late July 2015 (more than three months, notably, after Dave Nonis was fired as GM).

And while Lamoriello undoubtedly restored some order to the Leafs (albeit with antiquated rules like no facial hair or high jersey numbers), experience didn’t keep Lamoriello from making a series of damaging moves either that later needed to be undone, like signing Nikita Zaitsev and Patrick Marleau to bloated contracts.

Maybe the person with no actual GM experience (like Carolina’s Eric Tulsky for instance) could come up with a more creative solution to the trading of a star, or better unearth value on the free-agent market, than the person who has done the job before.
