TSN NHL insider Chris Johnston was a guest today on TSN 1050 Toronto’s Leafs Lunch show.

Here are Chris Johnston’s comments regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs ongoing search for a new general manager:

- Brad Treliving is currently the main person of interest

- Treliving is naturally the favourite to become the Toronto Maple Leafs new GM

- the only confirmed and known Toronto Maple Leafs GM candidate is Brad Treliving

- there is secrecy around the Toronto Maple Leafs GM search process

- the Toronto Maple Leafs are picking from a narrow field because of their preference for experience

- the Toronto Maple Leafs might name a new GM in the coming days or within a week

- Marc Bergevin is an experienced NHL GM who has had success in a Canadian market

- Bergevin is a strong trader and has been aggressive at times

- the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a new set of eyes and someone who could shake things up

- current assistant GM Brandon Pridham remains under contract and committed to working for the Toronto Maple Leafs

- Brandon Pridham's prominence with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization will continue to grow and his importance will most likely be recognized by the new incoming Toronto Maple Leafs GM

- Brandon Pridham is close to former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas

I really hope they don't just have their mind made up on Treiliving already. I read somewhere that him and Liewiek's family are close?

Not that I mind him that much I just think there's better options out there.

Botterill could potentially be the most intriguing out of those 4. Mostly because I think the Kraken's front office group has quietly done some pretty interesting stuff, his time in Buffalo is pretty mixed

Chia and Bergevin would be titanic level disasters.

Trevling the neutral choice among them -hence why he's likely almost certainly the front runner

"I'd expect Toronto to interview" - means he's just throwing shit at the wall.

I think that you actually referring to Larry Tannenbaum who is the Chairman of the Board, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

David Bastl said at around the 1:35:45 mark of the Steve Dangle Podcast that "The Treliving, Tanenbaum friendship is very mighty".

I see it as

Treliving/Bergevin

Botterill

Chiarelli

Bergevin, like Treliving, has had some iffy drafts and brutal UFA contracts given out. But their trades are fine, or at least better than Dubas.

Botterill is a big unknown. He seems like he was dropped into a shit situation.

Chiarelli. If this team can't entertain us by being good, maybe they can at least entertain us by being a complete joke.

Seems odd that Shanny would handcuff himself to a very mediocre crop of experienced GMs... Especially since mediocre is all he is going to get under the current organizational structure. Good experienced GMs would want exactly what Dubas wanted.

But then again, our president wouldn't exactly be the best option to mentor a rookie GM either... Considering he is as much of a rookie as they are when it comes to GMing.

At least most other teams recognize that if you are going to have this kind of dynamic, the president needs to have extensive GM experience (Nashville, Montreal, Vancouver)

Interesting.

I really hope we don't end up with a hiring based on nepotism.

I think the jest GM will be Brad Trelilving unless there is a GM with an out clause that we pry away that nobody knows.

With regards to Botterill people should consider he had to work under the all seeing Pegula eye. It was probably the worst operation in the league when he signed on. Maybe not the best candidate for TML at this moment but certainly worthy of having a chat with.

What about this twist JFJ comes back and redeems himself by building the leafs to Stanley cup champions!
Interesting and an opportunity for some fantastic irony.

Edited to remind: Tuukka Rask.

Perhaps not.

There may be another candidate I'm hearing, and if it's true, I would absolutely love for the Leafs to hire him, Doug Armstrong of the St. Louis Blues!

Neptotism or not, the last thing I want is for them to bring in some GM with ideas that might challenge Larry or the rest of the board. Their continued comfort must be our top priority.
