jesus wtf happened in 2017
A drug war between cartels.

The escalation seemed to coincide with the capture and extradition of El Chapo to the US in January of 2017. I think people are jockeying for position now.

that’s a 272% increase...that’s insane. what you said makes sense though

Since 2010 I have flown into Cancun 12 times but I haven't been there in over a year. I have never stayed in Cancun. I typically go right from the Airport to Tulum on my way to Punta Allen but I have spent nights in Akumal, Puerto Aventorus, and Playa del Carman.

I have driven up and down the Maya Riviera as far south as Xcalak and into Belize...I have never seen anything usual. I think the worst thing I ever saw was a brawl on the streets of Playa del Carman among tourist. Maybe I am lucky? Maybe it's that the places I go are a little less touristy as all I am interested in is fishing...I don't know.

Something has changed in Cancun over the last two years. The murder rate has sky rocket due to drug related violence. Something new is going there and it is unfortunate. In 2010 Cancun had 4 murders.

Murder Rates
2018 — 286 (as of July 19) -
2017 — 227
2016 — 61
2015 — 37
2014 — 21

Holbox and Campeche are still very high on my to-do list but I do have some reservation with the recent uptick in violence.

Drug related crimes started to ramp up.

You can find drugs anywhere in Cancun, literally anywhere.

That's why you see vendors in shops getting murdered. Any club that I have been to in Cancun( pretty much did all of them, except maybe 2), you have people selling drugs inside the club in the bathroom and it's not like they hide.

Not sure how many times I heard
"cocaina amigoooo!".

It's simply the poor reality of their lifestyle. They are underpaid, they see tourists come and will do anything to make some money.

In Cancun, money buys you everything.

The government is stuck between 2 walls because they don't want to initiate a war against the cartel and turn off people from coming. So they let them do what they want when it comes to selling drugs. They want to avoid Cancun becoming Acapulco 2.0

Cancun and America aren’t that different when it comes to “money buys you everything”.

I love the Yucatan. It really is a shame that this going on there and it is even worse that the whole place's reputation is sullied by it.

I can tell you that in the small fishing villages like Punta Allen that kind of stuff doesn't happen.
The Sian Ka'an Biosphere is an amazing place worth checking out. Hopefully they never fix the sand road from Tulum to Punta Allen. It keeps most of the tourist out because it is so difficult to get to.

Take a look at the "road" :)

As I mentioned earlier in this discussion, my guess would be there's been a change in the "protection" scheme which existed between the government and the cartels.

The reason the crime rate in Cancun was relatively low wasnt because it's such a great place, it's because the drug cartels were being paid-off to leave Cancun (and other towns where wealthy, white, tourists flock) alone.

While "protection" may play a part in the story it is not the reason.

The reason is cartels are fighting a turf war. The Zetas, the Gulf Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel all have claims in the Yucatan peninsula. The Sinaloa Cartel is the one Cartel El Chapo ran. There is a shuffling happening.

The BBC writes about this all the time Mexico's most-wanted: A guide to the drug cartels

Out of all of this, my question is, why did you wake up at your exes house?

Seriously though, update us on why you find out. Wishing you well.

Huh?

She finally moved out last month after 6 months post breakup

i'm trying to stay civil/friends with her because she's not a bad person and because she's keeping the cat.

ER doc was useless - probably a few hundred/thousand dollars that i dont have to get some tests and bloodwork done to find out, "well, we can't really tell, you're gonna need to find another doctor", the vicious cycle of doctors giving up on me continues now going on like3/4 years

Are there money lines to wager which cartel wins?

similarly i'm also having stomach problems - last 3 weeks. finally going to a doc tomorrow.

i've had gas issues my whole life, but with this latest bout (i had suspected food poisoning at first), it's just been constant trips to the bathroom, and i'm feeling extremely dehydrated

IBS-D?

Is it celiac or perhaps something diet related? I assume you've gone to a gastro

been to two separate gastros, had an endoscopy, push endoscopy, colonoscopy, pillcam endoscopy, and now an ultrasound.

the most i've gotten is "it might be crohn's but i can;t tell" and "your gallbladder is a bit inflamed but other than that youre fine , you can leave now"

Hope you feel better and docs can pinpoint your malady
