Hang on to Barker for starters, then we can assess what's to be done..

Obviously retain Schroeder and Tanev. As far as the UFA's goes..well that depends on how their seasons go. Higgins and Lappy have been invisible so far but looked real good last season. If they can go back to that then I'd re-sign them. Same with Raymond who has had a nice start to the season. But I don't see us keeping Higgins or Lapierre(he has a better chance of staying). The rest are easily replaceable.

- Lock Tanev up for 3-4 years, if possible
- Sign Lappy to something short if he's willing
- Let Malhotra walk
- Reassess the wingers after the season

One of Raymond, Higgins is going to be replaced by Nicklas Jensen most likely. Not sure what the future holds for Malhotra in Vancouver. Unless he takes a cheap deal, I don't think we see him back. I could see us re-sign Lapierre for the fourth line. Re-sign Schroeder and Tanev regardless of what they both do this season; they're without a doubt being re-signed, so I'm not worried.

Rest of the players list are depth players, or NHL journeymen.

Well, first off, you would need to assess what positions are going to be available next season. The top six is virtually locked up at this point if Kassian continues showing that he's top six material, and if David Booth proves he belongs there and can stay healthy.

Sedin-Sedin-Kassian
Booth-Kesler-Burrows

The bottom six is where things started getting tossed up. based on performance, contract and potential, I have these spots "locked down":

_____-Schroeder-Hansen
_____-_____-Weise

So theoretically, there would be three bottom six spots open. Now Nicklas Jensen could potentially jump into that spot on the third line, or enter into the top six. Leaving us with two fourth line positions open. Lapierre and Malhotra would be obvious fit for the 4th line center role, but maybe the Canucks think they can find someone better in free-agency. If Jensen doesn't make the roster, then Higgins or Raymond could be re-signed to take on that third line spot again.

Defense is completely locked up in the top 4:

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Garrison-Edler
_____-Tanev

I believe Tanev will absolutely be re-signed, and Ballard will be waived, opening up that third pairing job to someone. The internal candidates would easily be either Connauton or Corrado, but the Canucks could try and find someone in FA to bring in and plug that hole.

^Good post, I agree with basically everything you said.

I'd like to see, to start the 2013 season:

Sedin-Sedin-Kassian
Booth-Kesler-Burrows
Raymond-Schroeder-Jensen/Weise
Higgins-Lapierre-Hansen
Volpatti

Garrison-Edler
Hamhuis-Bieksa
Connauton/UFA-Tanev

This better happen. If we keep Ballard (as much as i have no problem with him) , i will be calling for MG's head

We'd lose two valuable players for him. Due to the cap.

And Pinizzotto for cheap bucks . That guy NEEDS to get his chance

Alright if this works out I would do this.

Sedin-Sedin-Kassian
Booth-Kesler-Burrows
Raymond-Schroeder-Jensen
Volpatti-Lapierre-Weise

Lapierre and Weise if we resign and Malhotra walks. Only thing is the 3rd line might get tossed around unless the defense protects them.

If volpatti keeps up decent play, i wouldn't mind keeping him and Pinizzotto around as extras. That guy NEEDS to get his chance (Pinizzotto that is)

Aren't they going to buyout Ballard this summer I thought I heard that somewhere.

He has trade value, don't see why we'd buy him out when I'm sure we could get at least a draft pick for him, if not a depth player.

Oh true, i think i am tired too. lol maybe we shouldn't be posting at midnight.

He could fetch a 2nd rounder. IMO

Hes still a decent D man, just not in our system. Needs a lower end team where he has the green light to take the puck up the ice when he pleases. When you see first's given for third line C's... he should be atleast worth a 2nd or third.

I guess it all comes down to what teams needs are

Connauton is struggling too much and Corrado probably needs at least a year in the AHL. A defense man who has jumped over Connauton, and has played real steady with the farm team seems to be Peter Andersson. Might be the early favorite right now.

The guy gets paid 1.8, so you say major discount okay. but you say yes to lapierre with a standard raise.

Higgins got 18 goals and 43 points in a season (71 games) he was suffering from staph infections in which caused him to lose a ton of weight.

Still managed +16

Poor guy might be our new most underrated player now that raymond started off with a couple good games. lol

meanwhile on a good year for raymond, he gets to what higgins did last year and raymond gets over 2.5 million.. how much higher would you be going to go for raymond for less points? ;)

Agreed. Higgins is one of my favorite players on the Canucks, but there's so many questions that aren't really brought up. I think a bad team can overpay Higgins and get a top six role, so in that case - does he become affordable? IMO, i think Higgins will be doing fine again once Kesler is back. Kesler has better chemistry with Higgins than both Booth and Raymond. Schroeder is doing well with Raymond cause Schroeder has been pass first.

Personally, even if Raymond has a breakout year, I'd honestly consider letting him walk. His last good season was a contract year too, i believe.

That is also true. I dont think other teams might value him quite as low as some of our fans. He gets along with our teammates pretty well I think and could see him not asking for too much more to stay here. Hes moved alot, hes found a home here. Who knows. Id like to see him stay at the right price. Hope it happens
