I saw this posted by a user in a group I'm in.

"Listening to Overdrive tonight it was brought up the O'Reilly could not believe that when on the road for the playoffs in previous years the leafs as a team did not go out for team dinners. Everyone ate room service or at the hotel. ROR made it mandatory. It's clear from his comments about the coaching to his reaction to the room he wanted no part of being here. That is concerning... It's also concerning that 91 has allowed this to permeate under his watch. Maybe there is a reason as a captain he has two playoff wins in 15 years. The lack of leadership is worrisome. Hope Reeves is the guy who can be this teams version of Tie!"

The "Core" has been here together for what 6 years now? How can there be such a lack of camaraderie? Some might say "it's really no big deal" which may be the case for other teams, but it's not for this team. Guys like Matthews and moreso Nylander are literally allergic to scrums. No one is saying go in and rock a guy but for the love of god atleast take a man. As it's stands though, it looks like everyone is just teammates. They aren't brothers, they aren't comrades, they're just guys put together to maybe try and win a cup.

JT looks like a meh captain more and more every season. How is the cultural so non existent on your watch? I imagine this guy is a wet rag who use to only lead on the ice. Now he can't even do that. Bringing in Reaves is nice but are the $10M+ guys just going to let some grinder come in and change their locker room ? I honestly don't know, but I wouldn't count on it. This "team" is literally just high level, top end skill and not much else. Hearing this just doesn't give me alot of faith these guys can get it together.
Ryan Reeves said he would drag them out. You going to say no to Ryan?

Is this a person's personal opinion or a Facebook like to hockey patrol?

JT was always a shit captain choice.

The dude has zero energy, zero charisma.
I think he focus on not losing all his talents he still scored 24th since he signed out of all players in the league and he's no longer top 10 so if he's around 14th paid now he's really not that overpaid. I assume he's in the gym with a body like that you don't just have it. So yah he's working behind doors you can't see. Not everything leafs is a window.

This thread explains so much about so many things:

1. Why nobody seems interested in defending a teammate on the ice.
2. Why none of them seem all that devastated when eliminated from the playoffs.
3. Why the composition of the balance of the team is largely an after thought to the stars.
4. Why we only saw Swedish players bidding farewell to Engvall and Sandin.
5. Why we see the over the top goal celebrations during nothing regular season games.
6. Why none of the stars seem at all put out when a linemate departs for free agency.

What a pant load this post is

Why does it matter? It may be as simple as some players like to eat certain foods. Everyone says it is not cliquey and that is what we should be worried about. Who cares if you are sitting 15 feet from someone on the other side of a massive table... is that bonding? If there were issues within the team I am sure we'd hear about it.

Presenting an argument that a team dinner is about the consumption of food and not something else is odd.

I can't for the life of me figure out how you've gotten in trouble posting on other team's forums. You seem so nice. Then again why in the world would anyone want to post in another team's forum?

Lets see.

As of July 12th 2023

The teams opening night top 6 is better than it's been in 20 years.

The overall winger depth is better than it's been in 20 years.

The defense is more talnted and deeper than It's been in 20 years.

The goaltending is more talnted and deeper than It's been in 20 years.

That's not to say there aren't issues specifically 3rd line center.

But overall this team is stronger than it's been since 2003-2004

Why are we pretending like a team dinner is important? There are so many other ways to bond... they spend hours every day together from traveling, practicing, and games. Do you think they need another 2 hours together every couple of weeks to bond? If they don't do it throughout the 10's of hours together they won't do it during dinner when half the team has to scream across the table to talk with the other half.

I’m assuming this is said sarcastically on your part, but I actually am generally a nice person. That however is rather immaterial to this discussion. I said I was banned from another team’s board (can’t recall which one) and I hadn’t even posted. I was just reading their threads which is a long shot from against any rules.

And if you don’t like my reply to your post, maybe don’t post a bunch of made up content specifically for the purpose of being negative.

A forced team dinner isn't the solution, the absence of the naturally occurring team dinner is a symptom of something else.

It being an issue is a symptom of our fanbase being insane.

Everyone on the team said it is a really tight group.

Every time I check this board our team has a new issue, you'd think we were 32nd every single year.

Vegas did have the highest team dinners/60 last year.

Believing everything you're told is a symptom of something as well.

It matters bc it is a little odd that guys spent seasons together don’t dine together as a group.

Not sure about you, I played on a lot of sports team and I was a low level pro rugby player back in the days and we always dine and drink together as a group when we are on tour or playing away games.

The Reeves July 1st interviews seemed to suggest the dressingroom was fairly quiet and in deed of a shakeup. A guy like Tavares as captain, is obviously respected, but he has a very quite personality, - at the very minimum things needed a shakeup to some extent. How that comes to the team remains to be see.

That said, I'm a bit over folks trying to use ROR as some ultimate character judge. The guy will have played for at least 5 different teams by the time his career is over and signed an offer sheet as an RFA - none of that makes him a villain, but he's hardly a team loyalist or an ultimate judge of anything, he's a mercenary.

I guess in 20202 in the Toronto bubble there were some restaurant options at the hotel, but probably pretty limited and more likely it was more takeaway, and then in 2021 we were in lockdowns and most places were closed, IIRC.
I mentioned about that bc in the All or Nothing series, Foligno was introduced to the team during breakfast or lunch. That’s why it is odd that they don’t have dinner together.

Well, wouldn’t it make ROR’s comment more valid, since he has been on many teams and seen different team cultures and saw something in the Leafs dressing room that he hadn’t seen.

You really called Matthews and Nylander allergic to scrums? It should be illegal. You can't talk no touch hockey without mentioning Mitch.

We have the softest player in the league history on our team.
Hard to omit when you talking about scared non-combatants.

How many professional titles did you win?

Playing sports my teams did the same, but it didn't change how we played. Teammates are teammates, I got closer to them in the locker room than at the bars.

How long has Reaves spent in the Leafs' dressing room?

All the time Reev

From the interview it seemed it's what he was told by the front office during signing negotiations. In the tsn (or Sportsnet?) Interview on July 1 he flat out described the room as quite. Must have gotten told that from somewhere
