Peak of the series is Tony Soprano coming home beat as hell after getting rid of Richie Aprile just to have his wife spitefully tell him she's going to Italy while the recurring I saved the world today song plays. No circle was ever as vicious and probably the greatest end to an American TV episode.

So it was definitely Paulie/Patsy working with Lupertazzi, right?
I think Paulie knew it was going to happen. When Tony offered to bump him up and he said he would have to think about it.....he knew Tony was going and there wasn't anything he could do about it. It probably broke his heart too.

just watched the movie. I get what Chris would accuse Tony of killing him, but I mean, he wasn't gonna make it anyway, was he? When I watched the show, it felt 50% "get this off my shoulders" and 50% "mercy killing" if that makes sense

Man, i can see what people were so mad at, but honestly I felt like it was foreshadowed a bit throughout the show.

Are their any speculations as to who whacked him?

IMO most likely(in order):

-Butchie with the blessing of Little Carmine
-Butchie behind Little Carmine's back
-Paulie working with NY (he took an active interest in AJ's gf, and she was the only one who knew their dinner plans for that evening)
-Patsy (not likely. His future daughter in law would have been killed if she could parallel park). Meadow could have told Patsy's son where they were going for dinner, though.

It was New York. Everyone forgets about the Capo that Tony curbed in the little Italy resturant. He was upped when Phil got whacked. I think Paulie knew it was going to happen and he knew that he couldn't stop it.

I don't think Meadow would've been killed. Highly unlikely that anyone other than Tony was killed. I'm pretty certain it was New York though.

She would have been sitting right beside him. The show even pointed out that season how dangerous it was for Sil to be sitting across from someone that was to be whacked.

Very small chance. Hitmen don't usually screw up like that.

AI has evolved to the point where someone made a meme on Instagram of the Sopranos characters (Tony, Christophah, Paulie) talking about Game of Thrones. The video has profanity but the AI voices are spot on. Pretty neat stuff.

"He conquered the seven kingdoms! He was an explorer! In this house he's a hero!"

Finished the show and the movie about a month back now. It immediately landed inside my top 3 and will probably stay there for awhile.

We've been lucky to have so many exceptional mafia movies over the years (thank you, Marty), but there's something about bringing this subject to life on TV that's just so jarring.

With many mafia movies you can experience the 2-3 hour runtime that features a handful of major plot points, twists and turns, etc and go "yeah, I bet I could have survived that. I would have done X when this character did Y." This is one of my favourite things about the Sopranos, you sit back over the course of 6 seasons and just see people drop like flies for numerous reasons. There's just no way you can watch that show and delude yourself into thinking that you'd be a-okay in the mafia life.

Read a theory recently, and I likely won't be doing it any justice here because I am going to forget some points, but someone connected the dots that Tony could have been killed by the man in the Members Only jacket, hired by Gene's wife. At this point, Gene's aunts money would have come in, and Gene's wife could have hired a hitman for a large sum of money to take out Tony. This of course would be due to her blaming Tony for denying Gene's family's move to Florida, and Gene's subsequent suicide.

This scene always cracked me up - Vito is so funny here.

Quite the leap for her to just hire a hitman, especially since he didn't kill himself because of Tony

I liked that theory too, especially because Gene's suicide happened in episode 1 of the final season which is entitled Members Only. It seemed like tight bookends. That said, I am sure David Chase made that ambiguous on purpose and that was just one red herring amongst many.
