Re-draft before 5 years have passed are stupid anyway. It is my opinion that anyone doing a re-draft before d+5 doesn't know what he is doing.

Solely based on yesterday game, Cooley was better than Slaf.
Back to the 2022 draft, I was hesitant between Cooley and Wright. 35% for Cooley, 35% for Wright, 30% for Slaf.
We dodged the Kotkamiemi contract only to have the Kotkamiemi contract at home

Re drafts experts think Cooley would have anything close to his 61pts in 104gp with the Habs.
In reality he would be at like .3 ppg and we would wonder why we let Slaf go in the Cooley discussion thread.

You cannot compare both players. Anyway, Slaf's contract is bigger and longer.

Worse. Dollar for dollar, Kotkaniemi is a better player than Slafkovsky in terms of overall impact and hockey sense when contracts are taken into consideration.
Indeed; if one team can do it to a far superior young player, the Canadiens can do it to Slafkovsky.

He was worthy of the nine million before he signed his bridge deal because he had proven while on his entry level contract that he was a Norris calibre defenseman based on all the advanced metrics, the eye test, and more. We could have had him for 7.5 but for the bridge deal, and that would have been a steal before injuries accumulated and his play fell off.
No one since Subban has proven more on his entry level deal with the Habs, certainly not Slafkovsky.

This probably won't go over well but its time Slaf played 10 games in Laval. Play that lazy guy 24+ min a game. Give him so much ice time he pukes all over himself. That is the fix. Stop treating him like he is something special. He needs to be brought down a peg and honestly some humble pie will be good in the long run. Patches was in same situation as Slaf when we first came up. The problem is the current management doesn't have the ability to do the right thing. Kid need to learn to skate with his head up and not toe pic every 6 strides. That type of confidence can only happen in Laval. Most of the time you see him he is standing still or making one hand lazy plays.

Here's the situation where a bridge deal works
He signs cheap for 2-3 years and improves steadily but not to superstar level. Then when he is 23-24 we get to sign him for 8mil x 8years, or whatever his value is, and we have him locked up until he is 31-32+. Currently, he will be a UFA at 29 and will be looking to cash in on another 7-8 year deal later that will take him to retirement.
Three ways the long term extension fails:
1. He never becomes worthy of the current AAV
2. He walks as a UFA at 29
3. He extorts us for a ridiculous high AAV 7-8 year contract extension at age 29 and isn't worth it for the last few years
You think he's going to sign for a similar amount at 23-24 when the cap is 100+ million?

The amount he signed for his about what his value is projected to be in 3-4 years, it all depends on how he does.
If progress is Up Only then of course long term makes sense, if you aren't certain how good he will be bridge makes sense
In 3-4 years if he’s a 50 point player he’s going to sign for 5.5-6 million ish, which saves us 1.5 - 2 per year for those last 5 years. IF we don’t pay for potential then again.
If he turns into a physical 80+point beast perhaps red hot in the first half of his contract year what is saying he doesn’t ask for the equivalent of what nylander got? That could be in the 12-13m range.
There is risk in this deal
Way, way more risk in a bridge deal
You can say you’re not sold on the player without suggesting a bridge deal which is frankly, dumb
