Markov was Lidstrom lite until those injuries. Incredibly smart player offensively and defensively.
Absolutely. One of the most underrated player of his generation.

Bergevin and Molson should be ashamed for turning their back on such an excellent player and a career Hab who was so close to 1000 games.

Could have easily played at least one more season at a high level and deserved a 2-year contract.

3yrs×3M to start baby
In this particular case a 3 year bridge would be the smartest thing to do for both sides.

From Slaf's POV he's doesn't have the numbers yet to ask for much money long term.

From the Habs POV if he ends up being a franchise player you can make sure to lock him up for his entire prime (3 yr bridge followed by 8 yr max term).

Same but it's so close
It’s a coin flip. Markov was underwhelming to not good in the playoffs as far back as I can remember except that Theodore playoff. I could be wrong after that and before his knee injury. Definitely bad after the knee injury come spring time.

PK kind of let me down after his rookie year with the added weight but still more or less a playoff warrior.

Both are a bit overrated by us imo. Still great players but had their careers SOMEWHAT derailed by various reasons

There was a 3 to 4 years period that I stopped caring about the team (as in not being able to name who was on the team) after Markov left.
He is the reason why I watch hockey in the first place and the fact he was treated like that left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. I become a bit more involved now that the new management is in place but even that could fade away if the incompetence continues.

Still to this day, the team has not made the playoffs in a normal year since Markov's last season. Not a coincidence at all.

Pacioretty was a “pass-first” type winger when we drafted him too, ended up more of a goal scorer for us than a playmaker.

All this to say, it’s fluid. Slafkovsky has the talent to be both and will ultimately be both, IMO. The beautiful thing about the line right now is that all three players can play the playmaker or the shooter role. Suzuki has a much better shot than people give him credit for, Cole is a better passer than given credit for, and Slaf is starting to get his shot in order.

Now we just need a second line :)

They have four guys, and I think they will spread the wealth on two different lines.

Suzuki is such a great influence. He also has great chemistry with Slaf. Slaf actually plays a bit like Suzuki the way he can both dish and shoot. He also uses his puck handling to create passing lanes. They're a good fit for each other.

That line is really well-balanced on paper and it's clearly working on ice + they're all young kids that get along off-ice.

At the rate Slaf is progressing this year, I think the Slaf camp is more likely going to bet on next year for a big contract. Like if he was middle six player for this team, the bridge makes sense. But now he's essentially playing 20 minutes per night and producing at a top 6 F level. There's literally no upside for him to sign a 3x3 extension this summer.

Anyone who would think Subban was a bigger star than Markov doesn't know hockey. Markov was one of the most underrated players of his generation. Fans appreciated him but I don't think management ever really did.
The key word is underrated, even when Markov was a top D he might have been too 5 in the league at some point he never had the star PK was a bigger star even if Markov was the better player…

The powerplay is COMPLETELY different since Slaf has been on it. They move the puck so damn fast now and the cross-ice pass option from both Suzuki and Slaf really keeps defenders on their toes.

As much as Monahan was beast in the bumper position, Newhook makes very, very quick plays in that spot which has contributed to even quicker puck movement.

Spot on..................was never a big fan of Bergevin early on, but when he tossed Markov away man I could not have been more upset. Bergevin total jerk for what he did. Then around that time, he disrespected the alumni vets such as Savard, Cournoyer, Lalfeur and it just made it clear, this man was a total disaster, and he proved us right. If not for Price, he gets fired with Therrien.....

Where would Slaf be if Therrien was coach?
God help us...........
Thank goodness MSL was and is patient, and actually working with this kid.

When accounting for duration or career, I completely agree.

In terms of a peak and game breaking ability, it’s Subban. He had an ability to rise to the occasion that few players have.
Montreal was and is starving for that gamer

His prime was from 02 to 09 ish. He was out of his prime with the Hawks, and such a good player regardless. He had basically insane peak (Top 10ish) and also an insanely long prime, up until more or less 2015, where he was a first line forward.
Yeah his Ottawa days were something.
